He was exceptionally competent, exceeded only by Aurelius I think.

If we're looking for analogies, I'd say we haven't had that Emperor yet. We're in the stage where the Republic is an oligarchic farce and no one wants to admit we're in an Empire. Augustus just nudged everyone along a bit long the road to acceptance with the First Citizen bit.
