What the party stands for is the shared ideology and ideals of democracy (fairness to all, equal rights enjoyed by all, individual liberty shared by all, a government that serves the needs of its citizens.) Most often, you can find some of this in the party platform. The Democratic Party rules about what it takes to be a member of the party and vote in a primary or run as a candidate are not what the party stands for.
For instance, to me, Bernie Sanders pretty much embodies the democratic ideal. Bernie Sanders is not a member of the Democratic Party, so he is contemplating joining the party so he can run in the primary.
I'd bet you share democratic ideology and ideals with Bernie Sanders and me. But he does not yet share a Membership in the Democratic Party.
So, if I want to talk about what the Democratic Party stands for, I will talk about the shared ideals and ideologies of democracy.
Words have meanings.
