(39,215 posts)disabled daughter was confronting conservatives who thought that welfare - in any form - was wrong. The first thing I let them know was that I was on welfare with three kids. Horrible Just horrible!
Then I would introduce them to my baby. Sweet darling little girl who was obviously severely disabled. Most had never seen such a disabled child because most of these children were in institutions. Hidden away. Shocking Just shocking!
Then I would explain why we were on welfare. My explanation included the cost of the institution and the cost of home care. And remind them about all the children in the institutions. Stunned Just stunned!
And then I would sit back and wait. Because invariable they would explain to me that I was different. And I would explain why they were wrong. I was a single mother just like the other recipients.
Upset Just upset that I should think that the others were like me.
I don't know that I ever convinced a single one of them.
What I am getting at here is that the way they think about Planned Parenthood is exactly how they think about all the safety net programs. They do not need them so why should anyone else. They have no way of envisioning what it is like outside their own small worlds.
