51. He's always wanted to go down in history

As the president that didn't cause waves. He has governed with his mantra of " there is no red America and no blue America but a United States of America" no matter what the evidence in front of his own eyes showed him. Blithely pretending that if he is only nice enough, only charming enough, witty enough, the Good Old Party boys will come around.

And furthermore if he stops now it would jar with the narrative he has methodically built for his presidential library.

I don't fault him for starting out like that. If he had assented office in another time or place it should work. But I'm disappointed that he didn't step up and use the bully pulpit more once it was clear that the Rethugs had no intention to respect him or his generosity of spirit or more importantly the well being of the country.
