In reply to the discussion: World Court orders Russia to cease military operations in Ukraine [View all]EndlessWire
(6,573 posts)Chickenshit Russia declined to appear at the Hague to defend themselves, but had sent a letter on March 7th with a response. The Court (with 15 judges; that's how many the US needs now) went through the requirements of jurisdiction which enabled them to make a provisional ruling. They cited numerous times the Russian representative had appeared before the UN to seek action on Ukraine, what they said about various matters, and therefore concluded, amongst other things, that they did indeed have jurisdiction to hear the case, that all the criteria required for the case had been considered and that it passed muster.
By a vote of 13 to 2, the ICJ ordered Russia to cease and desist all of what it's doing (making war in Ukraine.) Ukraine won all of what it asked the Court to do. It seemed that there was more to consider, but Ukraine had only asked the Court to make a judgment on the genocide aspect of the war, under that treaty (or whatever it is.)
While the ICJ can't exactly order any physical reaction to the war, this is a huge victory for Ukraine in the court of international opinion, and will set the stage for hauling Putin and his cronies off to jail.
I am hoping that the UN kicks Russia out of the UN. The decision today might possibly set the framework for that (?) as the UN is getting fed up. I know that it might set a precedent for actions against each other, but they can't get any work done on this issue with Russia having a veto. It is absurd to think that one nation can interfere with the vote on what it itself is doing. They should be required to abstain. They are probably not holding the chair legitimately, anyway. This has tainted all the decisions made with them as a member, and certainly will going forward.
This is an important provisional decision today. More to come.
