Facebook Page Defends Accuser of (NYC) Police Commissioner’s Son [View all]
Though Manhattan prosecutors closed a rape investigation against a son of Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly of the New York Police Department without filing charges, supporters of his accuser are trying to restore her credibility and fight back against some of what has been written about her.
The supporters started a Facebook page, Shame on the NY Post, on Thursday, denouncing the newspaper for revealing the woman’s identity and publishing her picture on the front page under the headline “Shady Lady.”
“This is victim blaming and we stand opposed,” the Facebook page reads.
“We don’t claim to know what happened in this case or any specific case, but character assassination of this young woman is not fair,” it continues. “In addition, it feeds a cultural stereotype that makes it (even) harder for people to report rape and sexual assault.”
By late Friday afternoon, over 380 people had “liked” the page.
