8. I am the only one of six sisters

who chose to remain childless. Ours was a dysfunctional family, and I didn't feel I had adequate role models to be a parent. Plus, I read Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" when I was very young (before my adolescence). I decided then that if I wanted to be a parent, I could adopt or foster one or more of the thousands of children growing up in "group homes" across the nation.

I am an advocate now for our younglings. And it's for them that I grieve when I contemplate the mess we've made of our climate and our culture.
