8. I buy a new laptop every 5 years.

I just bought one a few weeks ago. I typically try to stay in the $1,000 - $1,500 range. I keep my desktop PCs for 3 - 4 years before I have to upgrade, but I would never spend $3,000 or more for something like that, and I definitely wouldn't spend that kind of money as a gift.
