When Grumman tried to attract engineers and workers to Long Island, they couldn't get enough people to move here, so they closed the operation and moved everything down south. Exxon has been moving research facilities down south, from NJ, too.

Housing was the big killer-- depending on whom you believe, median house price here is between $375,000 and $450,000. That doesn't get you much, and then you have to pay some of the highest RE and school taxes. And heat the place.
