PROLETARIAT (proletarian): The "lower" or "working" classes, the members of which must under capitalism sell their labor in order to earn a living.
cap·i·tal·ism: an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit.
In a capitalist economy, capital assetssuch as factories, mines, and railroadscan be privately owned and controlled, labor is purchased for money wages, capital gains accrue to private owners, and prices allocate capital and labor between competing uses (see Supply and Demand).
