I think there are some here who are genuinely impoverished. I, myself, have been fairly poor at earlier times in my life, and habits learned from that have stayed with me over the years. But in recent years I've been sufficiently above the poverty line that I probably no longer fully understand what it's like to live below it.

Don't get me wrong. I am genuinely grateful for my situation. And even though I've been somewhat poor, I've never been trapped in poverty. I recently read the book Evicted by Matthew Desmond, which follows the lives of several extremely poor people in Milwaukee who get evicted from their homes, often several times. It also profiles some landlords, so you do get to see both sides of the story, more or less. What's depicted is an extreme of poverty I have never come remotely close to. I recommend that book to anyone who reads in this group.
