26. The mileage wears you down, but I've painted myself into a corner

I have to be able to answer the phone and talk to whoever is on the other end in German, French, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Swedish or Catalan, and go to those places at a moment's notice if need be. I can't find a replacement, and I've been doing this for decades now. Next week, I have to be in Spain, Belgium, France, Germany, and "someplace in the Balkans." I gotta slow down.

On the other hand, I am NOT cut out for a desk job. Not in Washington, not in Dallas, not ANYwhere. Due to an oddball set of circumstances plus the professions of generations that have gone before me, I have a unique set of acquaintances that I like to keep up with as well. Many of them are now in their 60s, 70s, 80s, even 90s, and most of them aren't slowing down any more than I am.

Like Warren Zevon sang, "I'll sleep when I'm dead," which, come to think of it, he now is.
