It appears that he had a real change of heart after he became a Senator, in terms of voting with Democrats, as this list of where he voted against them in congress shows.

Do you think it was because he's grateful to establishment Dems in VT and the Senate because they've cleared the field of any Dem primary opponents whenever he runs for Senate?
