Hevesi is ready to resign (NY State Controller)
Advertisements [?]
State Controller Alan Hevesi is prepared to announce his resignation tomorrow to end a damaging criminal probe into his use of a state worker as his wife's chauffeur, sources familiar with his decision told the Daily News yesterday.
Hevesi has told colleagues he will accept the terms of a deal discussed with Albany County District Attorney David Soares - one that will require him to step down and plead guilty to an unspecified charge, the sources said.

A source familiar with the negotiations said the Queens Democrat will appear in Albany court tomorrow and announce his plans to resign.

...snip...

A number of Democrats, including Brooklyn Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, Westchester County Assemblyman Richard Brodsky, Buffalo City Controller Andy SanFilippo and Wall Streeter William Mulrow, have surfaced as potential replacements for Hevesi.

Because there are many more Democrats in the Legislature than Republicans, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan) is expected to have a large say in filling the vacancy should Hevesi walk the plank as expected.
