45. Carlyle isn't a defense contractor per se
They're a privately held investment group that buys controlling interests in lots of different kinds of companies. The issue with that they have invested in defense contractors and they've had George Bush Sr., James Baker, and other people of influence with legislators who vote on appropriations for defense contracts. The Carlyle Group in and of itself wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for all the GOP ex-cabinet members, etc. that are willing to be extremely well paid lobbyists. Since The Carlyle Group is privately held, they aren't under the same scrutiny that a publicly held company would be. Of course there's nothing keeping these officials from being stockholders in Carlyle either.
