Groups engaged in counter-recruitment activities have been trying to make parents and high school students aware that the No Child Left Behind Act requires high schools to send info on boys to the DOD. There is an opt-out provision but you have to know about it first -- and the schools can't just opt-out all their students on their own or they face loss of funding etc.

The relevance to the Louisiana case is that the masters of war are trolling for as much cannon fodder as they can possibly get, in every way possible. Males have to register with the non-existent draft at 18 anyway -- what does the DOD need with the info on 15 and 16 year olds except as a form of record-keeping from which no one will ever escape. Rather like the old USSR, a jaundiced observer might say.

In any case, the DOD already has means of extra-early recruitment: ROTC is explicitly a recruitment tool, and high school career days always include a few representatives of our armed services to tell kids how nifty it is. As one of my VFP friends told the school board: unlike most other careers, military service is a career in which you can readily get killed.

What Louisiana needs are some Conscientious Objectors groups, Friends, and Vets for Peace to spread the word about this latest stealth recruiting tool. Louisiana undoubtedly has some of these folks already -- people just need to hear what they're saying. Maybe this father's outrage will help some of his fellow citizens to wake up and pay attention to what their state legislators are doing.

I don't wish the so-called Red States any harm -- their kids are dying too.
