There's no way Saddam and al Qaeda were going to form an alliance. Saddam's Iraq was secular, not a Muslim state, and Osama was not about to side with a secular nation, no matter the enemy. Osama and Saddam were more likely to kill each other than form an alliance, and that was always the case: Osama once called Saddam an 'infidel' and marked him as one that needed to be killed.

Furthermore, Osama has always used the United States as the example of Western imperialism, and predicted that the US would invade a Muslim nation without cause. US invades Iraq, Osama gains tons of recruits. The invasion of Iraq did us no good, and in fact did us irreparable harm.
