It is time to restore competence and merit to government. Say what you want about Clinton, but he appointed competent people. His FEMA director wasn't some political hack who couldn't even run a horse club. His attorney general wasn't a radical cleric who spent thousands to cover statues and botched terrorism investigations. His Secretary of State actually read documents that were addressed to her and could figure out that planes could fly into buildings.

This is about more than retoring basic competence, though we sure could use some of that in NO as I type. This is about the very nature of how we live. Does it matter if our government can prevent disasters and respond to them when prevention fails? Does it matter if we can protect our own country if God forbid we get attacked? Does it matter if we feed, clothe, and doctor the poorest among us? Does it matter if we educate the masses? We know the answers to those questions. NO puts some of those answers in stark relief for us.

We need to restore science to our decision making. We need to restore accountability to our cabinet. We need to restore merit to our selection processes. It matters who has these jobs. NO helps us see that.
