They are their own distributors; buying directly from publishers instead of going through Ingram or Baker and Taylor.

Bestsellers almost NEVER can be returned to publishers, that's why 4 months after the latest Grisham comes out, you see it for 5.98 at your local bookstore. They will take a substantial loss on this.

BTW, bestsellers are calculated from WHOLESALE, not retail figures. That means Sprawl-Mart has pushed them up in the bestseller lists (it's still no. 1 on NYT) WITHOUT selling anywhere near their inventory.
