Behind the Green Door (1972) was the first pornographic movie widely released in the United States. Directed by the Mitchell brothers and starring Marilyn Chambers as Gloria Saunders, the movie depicts her abduction to a sex theater, where she is force d to perform various sexual acts in front of an audience, with characters including nuns and trapeze artists.

I actually saw it at the Mitchell Brothers Theater in San Francisco. As disgusting as it was, it was the hip thing to do because the film wa s considered ART. Hey, it greased the way for 'Deep Throat' which may have received more notoriety, but I've never seen another X-rated movie since 'Behind the Green Door'. Not my cup of tea. ä
