just on a whim. I said to him, "Well, here I am in Rice City. And I, well, don't see a city anywhere around here. And no rice paddies, either. I'm betting that you can tell me why that is."

Ended up talking with him for over an hour, with the DVR (Digital Voice Recorder) running, and taking notes all the while.

I found out something important today. I can get people to talk to me. People who don't usually open up to strangers, especially to strangers who are wearing a suit and tie, and driving a Volvo.

And they'll tell me some remarkable stories, like that of an 82-year-old guy who is filling up his time by working on planning for the 200-year anniversary of the church in his little village, which celebration is five years away. He's planning to see the fruit of his efforts...when he's 87.

I'm catching the scent of a second career on the breeze, here.

There's still an awful lot of America out there, if you only take the time to look for it.
