Had Clark or Edwards dropped out after NH, maybe if they'd dropped even after Tuesday, there would have been a shot for the other one to use the South as a springboard for the rest of the country. But it's too late now. The best that could happen is that one of them becomes a regional candidate and sweeps most of the South -- Kerry would still finish second or third in all the southern states and keep picking up delegates, while crushing almost everywhere else. McCauliffe is getting what he wanted out of this wretched format: a quick primary. I think it produced the third best candidate, but what's done is done.
