comes anywhere close to what's happening now.

Kerry pretty much sealed the deal in Iowa. The subsequent primaries were just a formality. There were hopes but everyone pretty much knew the reality.

Most of the hostilty came before Iowa. It was angry and hostile but it didn't really last that long and most everyone got behind Kerry pretty quickly.

THis time it's so much worse. I don't remember anything resembling the nastiness we have now.
