Nassau Dems to support own for DA

BY MONTE R. YOUNG AND RICK BRAND

April 12, 2005

Fearing the loss of the party's "core" supporters, Nassau Democratic leaders yesterday backed away from a cross-endorsement of District Attorney Denis Dillon, a Republican with staunch anti-abortion views who is seeking his ninth term this fall as the county's top law enforcer.

Instead, Nassau County Democratic Party chairman Jay Jacobs said in an interview he intends to throw his support behind Kathleen Rice, an assistant U.S. attorney in Philadelphia. Rice, 41, a Garden City native, is expected to resign her federal post and move back to Long Island to make the race, Democrats said.

"I have decided to recommend to the Democratic committee, that they not endorse Denis Dillon, and recommend that the party endorse Kathleen Rice," Jacobs told Newsday.

Jacob's endorsement sets up a possible floor fight at the Democratic convention in May or a party primary in September between Rice and Cynthia A. Kouril, a partner in the firm of Robert L. Folks & Associates who announced several weeks ago that she is also seeking the nod for district attorney.
