Broad brushes are the tools of bigots. I'm not calling you a bigot; I'm saying that we use bigots' tools (and sweeping generalizations) at our peril. The country is far more granular than can be described in one careless statement.

To my eyes, the dots on the map correlate rather neatly with population distribution.

In most of the red states and the blue states, single digits of percentages separate those who supported Kerry and those who supported Bush. We can't afford to alienate potential Dem voters in the next election with snobbish put-downs...especially when they aren't true. With few exceptions, the red states and the blue states are actually purple.

Here's an excellent dissection of the *actual* demographics of the electorate, by Pew Research. Even if you only skim this, you will find astonishing refutations of what passes for common knowledge around here. There is no excuse for us to be ignorant when this kind of research is easily available.
