If the reportage of the mine disaster results in more attention being paid to the dangers under which the people who help mine one of our crucial energy sources must work, and to ways to change that, or make us rethink our dependence on coal as an energy source, it makes sense to cover that as a story.

That's a different matter from just trying to exploit people's personal tragedy. And it would have more of a legitimate impact on our lives than finding out what happened to some vacationing teenager in Aruba.
