21. as an intelligent, progressive American,
I like him. I sure as hell don't agree with everything he says or believes; he thinks the Vietnam war was a good idea, likes Coulter (this is the closest to unforgivable he gets for me) and from time to time says things that flat out offend me. But he also is a welcome and important voice cutting through the bullshit too, in an age where that's extraordinarily important. I saw him live a few days after the 2004 election and he was on fire; I had a friend with me who was not very familiar with Maher (and who is further left and more generally "politically correct" than me) and he was blown away by how funny and right on the money Maher was that night.( as was I). And yeah, there were moments when I thought he was anywhere from not funny to offensive, but that night, like any other time I've seen him (mostly on you tube these days) the good he did in mocking the idiots running our country along with the idiots that support those idiots, far outweighed moments of insensitivity etc. You can't always pick your allies, and mass appeal comedians who point out how full of shit the right wing is are an asset to our side.
