Liberals are flirting with the politics of self-destruction...

Liberals, who protested for eight years against the wars of George W Bush, are now being asked to support the Democratic President in his quest for war. This is putting some of the President's most avid supporters in a bind. They refuse to support this war. And there is the danger that they might refuse to support this President in the next election.

If the liberals indeed were to "sit out" the next election, the Party and the country would suffer greatly. Most likely, the right-wing, evangelical, war-mongers would regain power. The Democrats could blame the liberals for their defeat. But, they could have prevented such a disaster. They could have changed course just a bit.

Hopefully, the situation will be much improved by 2012? It is unlikely to be much improved by 2010. Only in defeat will the liberals be appreciated. It would be the epitome of a pyrrhic victory for the liberals. The President needs to lead.
