independents left the president in droves that were behind his election in 2008. My theory is that in order to reel the middle back in, policies that will result in left wing outrage, angry headlines at HuffPo, special comments attacking the administration from Keith Olberman, sarcasm and smarminess from Rachel Maddow, and Mike Malloy channeling Howard Beale... all under the likely correct assumption that once they see a wide open republican presidential primary featuring candidates tearing each other limb from limb to out conservative each other, he'll by comparison look more appealing to the middle and more tolerable from the left.
