18. They all "made it" and we didn't.
That changes things, doesn't it?

I mean, I don't think we are so naive as to think that navigating the channels of power, prestige and money is about being able to remain an idealistic person with impenetrable values and integrity when it comes to those below your new status.

One would expect the oneupmnaship, (its chief function) of the human mind to play into the rise to power and notoriety, no matter what part you play on that level of the stage. I say that in light of what I see in the public arena. I base it on the types of people and the perspectives and politics they spew. If there were no hurdles and defined echelons that serve to weed-out real trouble makers and hone and groom the up-and-coming participants who aspire to higher rungs on the ladder, we would see a far greater spectrum of powerful benefactors wielding swords of justice and beneficence for the common man.

Instead, we seem to see what looks like a cavalcade of sociopaths who step on what they can to take the reigns of power we allow them, (because we are trained to be docile and expect and need leaders) along with a few who seem to be sensitive and caring to our needs, yet prove to be rather impotent and wanting in results as they consider and care for their own careers.
