Mad_Machine76's JournalSerious Question: Why are some people so worked up/crashing out about Mamdani?
Reading the post about Debra Messing and just seeing the generally apocalyptic discourse surrounding Mamdani, particularly among certain demographics, I feel like some people are just losing their minds about the guy but I haven't figured out why all the panic about him beyond vague "concerns". It's gotten to the point too where Trump is threatening federal funding for NYC, as well as some Republicans musing about stripping him of his citizenship and deporting him. Can somebody explain to me what the actual concerns are about him? THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!
SCOTUS Reform
One item I've not really seen discussed regarding SCOTUS reform is this so-called "Shadow Docket", where Trump has been getting consistently bailed out on by the current SCOTUS. I can maybe see the potential *occasional* need for an emergency un-briefed Supreme Court ruling, but it should not be getting overused on non-emergency matters. Certainly, mass layoffs of Federal Employees don't IMHO rise to the level of needing an emergency ruling from SCOTUS. Congress needs to put some limits around these kind of rulings so that we do not continue to see the abuse of these rulings, that should require briefing and oral arguments and not just an unsigned opinion from the majority. What does everybody else think?
Invasion?
Can SOMEBODY- Democrats, journalists, SOMEBODY- please tell Republicans to pony up some kind of citations, research, evidence, etc. of this so-called "invasion" that they continuously say occurred under Joe Biden, or to (not-so) kindly STFU about it?! I'm so tired of hearing this repeatedly from one Republican/MAGA after another, but it is being left unchallenged! I haven't heard anybody lift a finger to object to this despite the abject lack of evidence, and it has become a mantra whenever the topic of immigration is being discussed.
Iraq Reconstruction Parallels w/DOGE
I've brought this up in a few places here and there on social media (without much of a response), but does what's going on right now with Musk and DOGE seem a lot like what was happening in Iraq with the post-invasion reconstruction? The wanton firing of civil servants, looting of government agencies, the mysteriously constituted and opaque "Coalition Provisional Authority (nobody could figure out who exactly was in charge of that either)," massive corruption, etc. I'm sure other people can probably make some other parallels that I'm not thinking of right now but, considering how the miscreants pretty much got away with it last time, I wouldn't be surprised if notes weren't taken by the perpetrators of that looting for this very moment here in this country.......
Thoughts, opinions?
So the only things holding up most of our government
Are willful adherence to norms and rules and that, until now, we never had a President willing to utterly disregard and destroy everything?!
Has a Former 1-Term President Ever Run Again 4 Years Later and Won?
Or would that be unprecedented in terms of our history? Do we think that Americans are ready to make history electing a former 1-term President or electing the first African-American woman as President? - semi-rhetorical
Closest example I can think of is Nixon but he was never a former President (and it was actually 8 years later that he ran and won).
CNN Reporter was grilling NC Attorney General/Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate last night about disaster recovery
Practically blaming him or questioning him about how long recovery is going to take. NC Attorney General kept telling reporter that they're still in search and recovery mode and they're working as quickly as they can to help people. Reporter pulled out quotes from people questioning how soon things will be better. It was really annoying.
