The Eugene Marathon in Oregon -- A record number of runners take to the streets and honor Boston
Word got around that a simple hand-over-heart gesture at the finish line would indicate support for the victims of the April 15 tragedy, and many exhausted runners remembered to do it.
Some handmade signs by spectators remembered Boston, some runners wore Boston Strong T-shirts, and there was a large, white, Eugene4Boston banner that quickly filled up with colorful signatures, prayers and other greetings to the Massachusetts capital.
Overall, it was a record-breaking day for the Eugene event, showing that the running community would not be deterred by fear of attacks.
Close to 9,000 people participated in the marathon and half-marathon, up 700 from last year, said Richard Maher, race director.
Eugene resident Zach Klonoski ran his third marathon just two weeks after completing the Boston Marathon. He had not planned to run the Eugene race, but after the bombings in Boston decided to sign up.

Thurston High School shooter Kip Kinkel seeking shorter sentence
Now Kinkels lawyer is asking a state judge to toss out his nearly 112-year sentence, based on a ruling last summer by the U.S. Supreme Court that dealt with mandatory life in prison without parole for juveniles.
Kinkel, now 30, was just 15 when the unthinkable hit home in Lane County on May 21, 1998. After killing his parents, William Kinkel, 59, and Faith Kinkel, 57, in their rural Springfield home the night before, he opened fire with a rifle in Thurstons cafeteria the next morning.
His rampage claimed the lives of 17-year-old Mikael Nickolauson and 16-year-old Ben Walker. It also altered hundreds of other lives, from shooting victims and their families to students, staff and emergency workers who experienced the event.
Kinkel agreed to accept a plea deal to serve 25 years for the fatal shootings. However, a judge sentenced him in November 1999 to 111 years and eight months without the possibility of parole, factoring in time for attempted murder counts.

Eugene Springfield is an extremely liberal metro area, but I don't see Mr. Kinkle as rating a reduction in his sentence for these crimes.
A guy just shot himself in the bathroom of the cyber cafe I am posting from (Open carry activist)
I rent a desk at Indra's in Eugene, Oregon where I have one of my desktops set up. The open carry guy who comes in here walked by me and went into the restroom behind me.
A minute later we heard a loud gunshot and a scream from the loo. We yelled in asking him if he was OK and he answered, "Get an ambulance."
He had shot himself through the leg putting his old west style replica revolver. The desk worker put a tourniquet on his leg and he asked for us to hide his gun so the police would not take it.
The employee told him no way, that then the police would wonder if we shot him, create suspicion, and that that would be tampering with evidence.
He was taken off to the hospital with a serious leg injury. The bullet fortunately ricocheted and went through the roof.
He is an open carry advocate, and I will post the story in thread when it is posted on the Register Guard (local paper) website.

Transgender player attains college basketball first
SANTA CLARA, Calif. The womens basketball team at Mission College expected the bleachers to be full and the hecklers ready when its newest player made her home court debut.
In the days leading up to the game, people had plenty to say about 6-foot-6-inch, 220-pound Gabrielle Ludwig, who joined the Lady Saints as a mid-season walk-on and became, according to advocates, the first transsexual to play college hoops as both a man and a woman. (snip)
A lifelong basketball lover, Ludwig has been helping coach and working out with the Saints since the beginning of the school year, but she only received conference clearance to compete on the last day of November. She took the court as No. 42 the next day, scoring three points on four free throws in about seven minutes of play. Last weekend, during her first home game, she scored eight points in 11 minutes, Facebook friend requests from the opposing team and not a single heckle.
I got exactly what I always wanted, just to fit in and be normal like everyone else, Ludwig said.
She is the tallest one.
