cloudythescribbler's JournalDeKalb County releases autopsy in 'Cop City' protestor Manuel Teran's Death
Source: ABC News
DeKalb County has released the autopsy results related to the death of Manuel Esteban Paez Teran, who demonstrated against the construction of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center earlier this year.
The training center has been the subject of controversy. City officials assert that the center could improve policing, while critics claim the effort is militarizing police and endangering communities.
Teran, who went by "Tortuguita" and used they/them pronouns, was shot and killed by police on Jan. 18 as officers raided campgrounds occupied by environmental demonstrators who had allegedly been camping out for months to protest the development of the training center, dubbed Cop City by critics.
According to the autopsy sent to ABC News, Teran did not have gunpowder residue on their hands. Officials claimed Teran fired the first shot at a state trooper. Officers then responded with gunfire. Teran had at least 57 gunshot wounds in their body, according to the autopsy, including in the hands, torso, legs and head.

So Tortuguita had NO gunpowder residue AND was shot 57 times -- not likely to get mainstream headline treatment much but is very telling
There is enormous reason to suspect that this was a targeted assassination
Ethiopia's Tigray Conflict: Truce Agreed
Source: BBC
A surprise deal has been reached in the Ethiopian civil war with both sides agreeing to halt their two-year conflict which led to thousands of deaths and warnings of a famine.
The African Union (AU) has called it a new "dawn", AFP news agency says.
The agreement between the Ethiopian government and Tigrayan forces should allow aid deliveries to resume.
Almost 90% of people in the northern Tigray region need food aid, the World Health Organization says.
About a third of the region's children are suffering from malnutrition.

Whether or not this truce will hold remains an open question
But they have agreed both to allowing full humanitarian aid freely into Tigray and to mutually standing down mobilization/arms

Former impeachment counsel wins crowded Democratic primary in New York's 10th District
Source: The Hill
Dan Goldman, an attorney who served as the lead counsel in the first impeachment trial against former President Trump, is projected to win the Democratic primary in New Yorks 10th Congressional District.
The Associated Press called the race at 12:39 a.m. Wednesday.
Goldman was among a dozen candidates seeking the Democratic nod in the New York House district.
Other Democrats vying for seat included Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-N.Y.), who represents the 17th Congressional District but ran in the 10th to avoid a primary fight with another member of Congress; New York state Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou, New York City Council Member Carlina Rivera and former New York City Comptroller Liz Holtzman.
Goldman, a Levi Strauss & Co. heir, poured millions of dollars into his election bid, and he had received a coveted endorsement from The New York Times editorial board. Some candidates sought to portray the former federal prosecutor as attempting to purchase his seat and not being liberal enough for their party.

As a supporter of the relatively progressive wing of the Democratic Party, it is dismaying to see this deeply progressive district lost by a splintering of the vote among some really great candidates -- such as Mondaire Jones and Yuh-Line Niou.
There was some really interesting commentary on the NY Times' endorsement of Goldman Tues morning on "Democracy Now"
Here's some of the commentary from "Democracy Now":
AMY GOODMAN:
Well, The New York Times drew scrutiny when it endorsed Dan Goldman without noting it was making an exception to its usual disdain for self-funded candidates or that the publisher of the Times, A.G. Sulzberger, lives in New York 10, has family ties to the Goldmans and did not recuse himself from the endorsement process. This prompted a rare news conference last week, where rival progressive candidates Yuh-Line Niou and Mondaire Jones joined together to speak out against Dan Goldman.
...
AMY GOODMAN: So, you co-authored this piece, Alex, New York Times Faces Backlash Over Dan Goldman Endorsement Debacle, New York Times endorsing three white men in a very diverse primary race: Sean Patrick Maloney and Jerry Nadler and Dan Goldman. Can you talk about Dan Goldman and the person right up against him, Mondaire Jones, the significance of Yuh-Line Niou, as well the significance of the Times not revealing the close ties of the publisher to the Goldman family?
ALEX SAMMON: ...
And the race, in particular, in 10 is fascinating, because right? the endorsement, if you read it, speaks glowingly of Mondaire Jones. If you read it without knowing who they were going to endorse, you would assume at the very least that Jones would be receiving a co-endorsement. But it ends up, you know, endorsing they end up endorsing Goldman. And of the six candidates that I mentioned, Goldman is the only one who isnt and hasnt held elected office. Hes the white man in the race. This is a majority minority district. Its New York Citys most diverse. And they dont even mention two of the four, really, of the front-runners even of that six. Yuh-Line Niou and Carlina Rivera dont even get mentioned in the text of the endorsement. So, those things are, you know, very peculiar.
And then, to add on top of that, the fact that the publisher didnt disclose his close ties to the Sulzberger family and the Goldman family have ties going back decades. Thats not disclosed. He didnt recuse himself from the endorsement process. And the fact that the Times editorial board, ultimately, in the statement that we were given, said that, you know, the editorial board answers to the public here, and these endorsements
===================================================================
I suppose the whole issue of whether the Working Families Party will run one of the progressives (Niou has been talked about) in the general is a very touchy one here on Democratic Underground, but it has real implications for the internal politics of the Democratic Party
Shireen Abu Akleh: Israeli Forces Assault Mourners Carrying Casket Ahead of Burial
Source: Middle East Eye
Israeli forces fired stun grenades and assaulted mourners carrying the coffin of slain journalist Shireen Abu Akleh outside a Jerusalem hospital on Friday, ahead of her funeral service and burial in the Old City.
Palestinian mourners insisted on carrying Abu Aklehs coffin on their shoulders from the St Joseph French Hospital to the Roman Catholic church in the Old City, before taking her to her final place of rest, the Mount Zion cemetery.
Before they could leave the hospital premises, Israeli forces attacked them, pushing them back, storming the yard and making arrests.
An Al Jazeera livestream captured the moment mourners nearly dropped Abu Aklehs coffin as Israeli forces beat them.

As a Jew, news like this makes me cringe even more than otherwise. SOMETHING must be done to stop these excesses, as they clearly throw gasoline on the flames of burgeoning anti-semitism around the planet

DHS Extends Temporary Protected Status for Immigrants from 6 Countries, Including Haiti
Source: WLRN Miami
At least 400,000 immigrants from six countries, including Haiti, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua, who have been allowed to temporarily live and work in the United States, are getting their Temporary Protected Status benefits automatically extended for 15 months by the Department of Homeland Security.
The extension means that the TPS beneficiaries, who also include nationals of Sudan and Nepal, can continue to legally live and work in the United States and, for now, avoid being placed in deportation proceedings.
The 15-month automatic extension decision was announced by DHS Thursday and will be filed in the Federal Register. The extension is part of DHS compliance with various orders issued by federal district courts in three separate federal lawsuits. The lawsuits were first filed under the Trump administration as it tried to end TPS designation for Haiti, Central American nations and others, and it has since been extended to the Biden administration.

Queens D.A. Primary Too Close to Call, as Caban Narrowly Leads Katz
Source: NY Times.com
Hours after the polls closed Tuesday, the race seemed too close to call, with Tiffany Cabán, a 31-year-old public defender, holding a narrow lead over Melinda Katz, the Queens borough president.
Ms. Cabán declared victory shortly after 11 p.m., telling the crowd at her watch party, We did it yall. But Ms. Katz did not concede; speaking to her supporters just before 11 p.m., she said that every vote should be counted.
God willing, I will come out on top, she said.
With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Ms. Cabán led Ms. Katz by 1.3 percentage points. Roughly 3,400 absentee ballots have to be counted, with Ms. Cabáns margin at roughly 1,100 votes. Board of Election officials said the count may not be completed until Wednesday, July 3.

It is a pretty high bar, under the circumstances, to come up with a thousand vote lead out of only approximately 3400 absentee ballots, but we still have to wait and see.
One thing about this race is that you have, unlike Crowley v AOC, a fully mobilized Democratic Party machine. And they ran strongly but appear to have narrowly lost. This is the kind of battle that deep blue cities and jurisdictions across the country will see b/t the establishment/neoliberal/"mainstream" Democratic Party stalwarts and relatively progressive insurgents. If this electoral pattern holds, it would mean first a major shift in the approach of at least the Democratic Party (including by efforts at cooptation) regarding the policies Michelle Alexander has identified as "The New Jim Crow", but also more generally.
This election is part of a much larger battle in the Democratic Party of great significance here at DU.
[Full disclosure: I donated (modestly) to Tiffany Caban's campaign as to AOC's primary campaign before it.]
Dodgers Outlast Red Sox in Record-Setting Game 3 of the World Series
Source: Boston Globe
LOS ANGELES Red Sox manager Alex Cora threw his pregame plans in the air in the 12th inning of Game 3 of the World Series on Friday night/Saturday morning. He sent Game 4 starter Nathan Eovaldi out to pitch, wagering the righthander could hold the Los Angeles Dodgers down long enough for his team to find a way to win.
The gamble almost worked. The Sox took the lead in the 13th inning and were one out away from putting the series in a headlock when the Dodgers scored on an error to tie the score.
That was only the start of the drama. One of the most memorable games in World Series history finally ended in the 18th inning when Max Muncy homered to beat the Sox, 3-2.
It was the longest World Series game by inning and time 7 hours and 20 minutes. The game ended at 3:30 a.m. in Boston.
