Nord Stream pipeline leaks spark sabotage fears

The latest: "There is no doubt that these were explosions," Bjorn Lund, a seismologist at Sweden's National Seismology Centre (SNSN) told public broadcaster SVT, Reuters reports.

One blast occurred early Monday and a second occurred later that day, per SVT.
The big picture: Two leaks were detected in the Nord Stream 1 pipeline and one in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. While neither pipe was operating at the time the leaks were discovered, both were filled with gas, Reuters reported. https://www.axios.com/2022/09/27/nord-stream-gas-pipeline-leak-sabotage

Beyond Meat COO suspended for biting man's nose - " ripping the flesh on the tip"

Almost can't make this stuff up!! Plus their stock is down 74% this year.

Doug Ramsey has been suspended, effective immediately, the plant-based meats company said in a statement Tuesday. He was arrested on charges of terroristic threatening and third-degree battery, court records show. Ramsey was allegedly at a parking garage when a Subaru inched in front of his Bronco, coming into contact with the front tire on the passenger’s side, according to a report by local station KNWA/KFTA.

Ramsey got out of his car and “punched through the back windshield of the Subaru,” according to the report. The Beyond Meat executive allegedly then started punching the owner of the car, who had left the vehicle, and also “bit the owner’s nose, ripping the flesh on the tip.” He also “threatened to kill” the other man, according to the report. https://fortune.com/2022/09/20/beyond-meat-coo-suspended-for-biting-nose/

Rat feeding study suggests the Impossible Burger may not be safe to eat

Rats fed GM yeast-derived protein soy leghemoglobin – the burger’s key ingredient – developed signs of toxicity. Report by Claire Robinson and Dr Michael Antoniou.

SLH is the substance that gives the burger its meaty taste and makes it appear to bleed like meat when cut. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initially refused to sign off on the safety of SLH when first approached by the company. The rat feeding study results suggest that the agency’s concerns were justified. Rats fed the GM yeast-derived SLH developed unexplained changes in weight gain, changes in the blood that can indicate the onset of inflammation or kidney disease, and possible signs of anaemia.

White House to establish office on long covid

On Wednesday, the Biden-Harris administration announced the creation of a new office focused on Long Covid within the Department of Health and Human Services. It’s a critical step towards legitimizing the lasting, sometimes debilitating effects of the post-viral illness — something that’s been conspicuously absent from public health messaging on the virus.

The White House and HHS outlined the functions and goals of this office, along with other strategies for dealing with the condition, in two reports released today: National Research Action Plan on Long Covid and the Services and Supports for Longer-Term Impacts of Covid-19 report. HHS Assistant Secretary for Health Admiral Rachel Levine, MD will lead the newly created office, and is tasked with implementing both reports.

At this stage, it’s difficult to know how many people are currently living with the post-viral illness, but HHS estimates indicate that between 7.7 and 23 million Americans have developed Long Covid. Of those, roughly one million people may be out of the workforce at any given time as a result of the condition, which the department notes is equivalent to about $50 billion in lost earnings each year.”
