BETSY DEVOS' SUPER PAC SPENDING THOUSANDS TO ELECT PAUL VALLAS MAYOR OF CHICAGO

man, i hope this guys loses and loses big.

CHICAGO – Last week ex-President Trump’s former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made a $59,000 independent expenditure in support of mayoral candidate Paul Vallas’ campaign from a Super PAC she funds, the Illinois Federation for Children PAC.

The Illinois Federation for Children PAC was established in March 2022 and has received $465,000 in total from DeVos’ American Federation for Children Action Fund, a national 527 PAC. The Illinois Federation PAC’s chair, Nathan Hoffman, was a registered contract lobbyist in Springfield for the American Federation for Children until January this year.

Although DeVos has not endorsed Vallas, Vallas’ education plans for Chicago’s school system are directly aligned with DeVos agenda of school privatization, one she supported as Secretary of Education and promotes through her national network of advocacy organizations and PACs: defunding and dismantling public school systems and redirecting public funds via programs like vouchers for private schools.

In a little-noticed February 2022 op-ed in the Chicago Tribune, Vallas laid out a radical plan for privatizing Chicago Public Schools (CPS). In addition to supporting Illinois’ existing Invest in Kids tax credit scholarship voucher program, which already diverts millions to pay for vouchers for more than 4000 Chicago children, Vallas would create a city-funded voucher program and pay for it with funds from the CPS operating budget earmarked for teacher pensions. The pension payments would then instead be covered by surplus Tax Increment Financing dollars.

The racist history of Chicago's FOP

i found this tidbit amusing, in a dark fucking way-

After Burge was fired in 1993, the FOP called the decision a “travesty of justice,” and announced that it intended to enter a float honoring Burge in the annual South Side St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Public outrage and cries of racism forced the FOP to withdraw the float.

disturbing bit, tho is that they are quoting bobby rush as saying the fop=kkk, but then he endorsed vallas.

they're the party of death.

found myself making this reply to 3 diff op’s this a.m. i think this is an appellation that we should do our best to make stick.
from trying to gut the aca, refusing to expand medicaid, treating women as disposable brood mares, letting people rot in jail, cutting poverty programs, refusing to provide safe drinking water all over the damn country, to painting a target on people for being who they are.

so many of their voters are acting out of fear, plain and simple. fear drummed up by highly paid liars. if i could get 1 message through to the other side, it would be-
FEAR THEM. they’re the 1s trying to kill you.

CPS schools remove dozens of cops, shifting $2M from school policing to other student supports

Last year, when 17 out of 72 schools opted to remove their cops, those resources were poured back into the district’s central operations and weren’t put into other programs for those schools. LSC members citywide said they were frustrated that the district was asking them to choose between police officers or nothing. Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Chicago Public Schools officials were also criticized for pushing the decision to LSCs in the first place instead of taking a stance last summer when racial justice protests swept the country.

The decision stayed at the school level this year, but the district partnered with community groups and advocates over the past few months to help each school develop its own alternative safety plan for the LSC to choose.

That led 24 schools to remove one of their officers and seven to take out both in votes over the past month in favor of new positions such as a dean of restorative justice or a culture coordinator. Another 20 schools kept both cops and two votes are still pending.

After those LSC votes, at least one officer will still be assigned to almost 50 CPS high schools, a majority. But the number of cops at CPS will have fallen from 146 to 74 in the span of two years

brandon johnson is getting pounded on ‘defund the police’. but there’s some interesting convos on twitter around this race. vallas gets a lot of pushback on it, including a link to this article.
i find it interesting that lsc’s are getting this kind of power. they used to be allowed to select principles and sign off on budgets. not many of those elected were happy about that. they regularly took on issues. glad to see they have leveraged that up.

well, 4 nights of data, and man is my sleep a mess.

getting a bit of a handle on what meds do what, but that will take time. but rem and deep sleep numbers r pretty bad. it give u a score, and i’m getting low 70’s.
big thing i got was that napping inst helping. it doesnt track them as a separate sleep, just rolls them into the night totals. but clearly they are light sleep that isnt doing much but wasting time.
so, i’m gonna try to resist, and see if it makes my night sleep better.
w more activity on top of it, hopefully i can get better. sleep is everything in my world. i get so very stoooopid when i’m exhausted. it discourages me. i need to find things i can do when tired that takes no brains. cleaning works. even zoning out at a screen, as long as it’s something good, not doomscrolling, seems good. puts me in a decent mood.

it does seem to be helping to keep track of it all. i need encouragement, and the numbers make me happy.
