“If Chutkan agrees that Trump’s penchant for public invective should be restrained, it will be his first brush with court-ordered consequences in a criminal case — consequences that, at least in theory, could be backed by the threat of jail time.”
“And a gag order would immediately raise two questions that could define his bid to retake the White House: Is Trump capable of abiding by a court-ordered restriction on his speech? And what is Chutkan prepared to do if he isn’t?”

The math doesn't lie.
For many years, I voted Republican. I was an Ultra-MAGA, four-time Donald Trump voter (twice in the primaries, and twice in the general elections). I voted for Ron DeSantis in the 2018 Florida gubernatorial primary and general elections. I was a right-wing pundit, whose writings were read by millions. I wrote, pro bono, text for Trump's voter outreach call scripts. I made volunteer calls to voters, on behalf of the Trump and DeSantis campaigns. I owned a dozen Trump hats and shirts, and sent money to his campaign that could have been spent on my family’s needs.
And I am here to show you that I was wrong about all of it.
To paraphrase Ernest Hemingway, my personal and political epiphany occurred gradually, and then suddenly, all at once. It started in Summer 2021. Children and young adults began falling ill more frequently to COVID's Delta surge. Governor DeSantis handled the pandemic as well as he could have, in its first 18 months. Abruptly, however, he pivoted from advocating the life-saving, hospitalization-reducing COVID vaccine, to virulently opposing it for young Floridians and those under 65. Once reports of kids dying from COVID increased in frequency, I had fully expected DeSantis to effectively lead by forcefully encouraging vaccination for our youth; rather, his persona seemingly changed overnight, and it was then that I began to question my support for him.
Simultaneous to this, Trump's continued traumatic rhetoric about a “stolen” 2020 presidential election stirred in me an intense curiosity to better understand what fueled those who rioted at the Capitol on January 6. I had thought that QAnon, the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys were mostly fringe hobbyist groups whose influence was minimal, at best. After immersing myself in the aforementioned's conspiracies and mythologies, I came to realize that these groups' propaganda was, very much, part of the MAGA ethos. It was then that I acknowledged my error in supporting MAGA.

Hamas is instructing Gaza residents to ignore a call from Israel on Friday to move south for their “own safety and protection.” The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) publicly called for “all civilians of Gaza City” in the north of the Gaza Strip to evacuate the area for “their own safety,” saying Hamas “terrorists are hiding in Gaza City inside tunnels underneath houses and inside buildings populated with innocent Gazan civilians.” In response, the Hamas Authority for Refugee Affairs told locals to disregard the alarming information and “remain steadfast in your homes” and “stand firm in the face of this disgusting psychological war waged by the occupation.” The United Nations says the evacuation order would affect 1.1 million people and could lead to “devastating humanitarian consequences.”

Thomas Hand tells CNN about finding out that his daughter, Emily, had died in the Hamas massacre at the Be’eri kibbutz in Israel.

A heartbroken father described his relief at hearing that his 8-year-old daughter had been killed in the Hamas attack on the Be’eri kibbutz in Israel after he’d spent days fearing she’d suffered a worse fate. Be’eri resident Thomas Hand told CNN that his young daughter, Emily, had gone to a friend’s house also in the kibbutz for a sleepover on Friday night. The Irishman managed to survive the rampage on Saturday—which claimed the lives of about 100 residents—but didn’t learn what had happened to Emily for another two days. “They just said: ‘We found Emily—she’s dead.’ And I went: ‘Yes!’” Hand said through tears. “That was the best possibility that I was hoping for. She was either dead or in Gaza. And if you know anything about what they do to people in Gaza, that is worse than death.” He said he feared his daughter would “be in a dark room, filled with Christ knows how many people, and terrified every minute, hour, day, and possible years to come. So death was a blessing. An absolute blessing.”

Red State Conservatives Are Dying Thanks to the People They Vote For

Those disparities are bound to increase over the coming years. Some of these studies are still looking at pre-COVID-19 statistics. As Charles Gaba has been chronicling for the past few years, the death rate from COVID-19 is higher in Republican-leaning areas. Republicans have made the COVID-19 pandemic a political fight, like in Florida where the actual person in charge of public health calls the vaccine “anti-human” and is urging Floridians to avoid the newest vaccines.
Studies are soon also going to have to account for states that have banned abortion and criminalized reproductive health care. A study last year from the Commonwealth Fund determined that “maternal death rates were 62 percent higher in 2020 in abortion-restriction states than in abortion-access states (28.8 vs. 17.8 per 100,000 births).”
One of the factors behind that is on full display in parts of Idaho, where there are no practicing OB-GYN physicians any more—they’ve left the state over fear of prosecution. That makes giving birth a lot more dangerous. Making it even worse, the state is now going to prosecute emergency room doctors who provide abortions to stabilize a patient’s health.
Gun safety legislation—or the absence of it—is another key difference contributing to higher premature-death rates in red states. In 2021, the states with the lowest rate of gun deaths were Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and New York. Mississippi, Louisiana, Wyoming, Missouri, and Alabama had the highest gun-death rates.
In all of these states, the so-called “party of life” has consistently proven that what it’s really about is actively enabling premature death. They’ve proven that by refusing to save lives by expanding Medicaid, by warring against basic science, by keeping people hungry and vulnerable, and by criminalizing doctors. All in the name of so-called “family values,” “freedom,” and the “sanctity of life.”

Donald Trump lashed out at Forbes on Monday after the magazine cut him from its list of the wealthiest 400 people in America last week. On his Truth Social platform, the former president complained that the magazine had “taken me off their Fake Forbes 400 list just by a ‘whisker,’ even though they know that I should be high up on that now very dated and discredited ‘antique,’” and accused the company of being owned by China and its “Sovereign wealth Fund!” “Removed from The Forbes 400, Trump responds as he always has—by lying about his net worth and saying he should be higher on the list,” Forbes said in response, noting it had taken “extraordinary care in valuing his fortune” and saying its ownership does not, in fact, include China’s wealth fund. Undeterred, Trump later posted on Truth Social to call Forbes a “China Propaganda machine, EXPOSED.”

Rep. Moskowitz Just Called Trump’s Bluff On Mar-a-Lago Valuation

The valuation of Mar-a-Lago is central to the ongoing New York fraud case against Trump. He has been accused of “grossly inflating the value of his properties to obtain favorable bank loans while paying taxes on valuations at or below market value,” as The New York Times explained. New York Justice Arthur Engoron, who is overseeing the fraud case, valued Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club at $18 million. That is in line with the county appraiser’s valuation.
Yet Engoron’s ruling brought howls of social media protest from Trump and his co-defendant son, Eric Trump, each of whom whined that the property “may be” or is “speculated to be” worth well over a billion dollars.
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) wrote to the Palm Beach County property appraiser about the matter. In addition to the complaints from the Trump defendants, Moskowitz also noted that between 2011 and 2021, Palm Beach County had valued Mar-a-Lago as between $18 million and $28 million. Yet, the property was listed as worth $490 million in financial documents provided to banks.

We're All Just Watching the Wheels Fall Off the GOP Clown Car

Sure, it's kind of amazing to watch as the Republican Party is in the midst of its inevitable crash. We're in the slow-motion wreck part of the arc of this story. It's the kind of self-immolation that you usually see in overly-literal protesters. It's quite a sight. You've got former President and current record-holder for most-indicted president Donald Trump, sitting lumpily at his trial for financial fraud, muttering and making noises like a gassy Charles Manson, as the judge repeatedly has to teach him how to act like a human being. You've got House Republicans now scrambling to see which of the various fucknuts, rape-enablers, or Trump penis koozies they are going to elect to wreck the nation by refusing to act on anything that isn't certifiably insane or blatantly destructive or both. And they might go to political war with each other, which would be a shit fight in a crashing clown car. You've got a passel of pathetic also-rans, bumbling around the country in a desperate attempt to get some traction for campaigns that were over the moment they announced, pinning their dreams on the imprisonment of the indicted original shit-lump, who lumbers wheezily to rally after rally to spout madness to a deliriously, gleefully violent cult of racist zombies, and yet, for some reason, the other non-Christie candidates can't bring themselves to say anything truly negative about Trump. None of this even scratches the surface of all the wanton fuckery Republicans are doing to themselves in their Trump-contorted reality.
Yeah, it's amusing as fuck to watch it happen. It'd be a fuck of a lot more fun if it wasn't a goddamned threat to all of us not inside the information vacuum MAGA freaks exist in. It's impossible to ignore growing violence and threats of violence from that aforementioned cult, and a leading candidate for president encouraging them to be ready to enjoy nonstop vengeance against their perceived enemies if he gets back into office and maybe to be ready to commit that violence if he doesn't. Meanwhile, the allegedly normal news media seems to give more of a shit about who Joe Biden's fucking dog bit than that the former president keeps saying shoplifters should be executed without trial.
As I said, the problem with the bloody detritus left behind after the clown car is done being wrecked is that you need to get it out of the way and get the road open again. And that's gonna fall to Democrats because we're the goddamn cleaning crew. With an assist from congressional Democrats, Clinton cleaned up after Reagan/Bush, Obama cleaned up after Bush, Jr, and Biden cleaned up after Trump. The difference now is that Trump and the Trumpians all crawled out of one wrecked clown car and immediately got into another one and now are making a mess again on the road that Democrats just fucking cleared. (Okay, I might need to let this metaphor go.)
Lemme put this simply: The Republican Party is no longer a legitimate national party. It is beholden to one man without whom most of the people who have supported the party the last few years would go back to crouching in their dirt holes, masturbating to murder porn and sending out anti-Semitic memes. I mean, they still do that now, but they also vote because of Trump. No Trump and no reason to vote. And smart Republicans know this, so that leaves them with a choice: stay on that imploding Trump train until the bitter end and hope you'll survive or jump off and have some goddamn dignity without being re-elected.
Or maybe there's another possibility, especially for the 18 Republicans in districts that Biden won: join the clean-up crew. Go independent and caucus with Democrats or just outright switch parties. It just take a few to switch control of the House of Representatives. Say you did it because you want to get shit done and you're tired of working with people who ought to be institutionalized. You're sick of Marjorie Taylor Greene's protein drink farts and Jim Jordan's flop sweat smell on his polyester shirts. Who could blame you? Otherwise we're stuck with the screaming clowns until at least January 2025.

Donald Trump marked the first day of his New York bank fraud trial by sharing a baffling courtroom sketch depicting Jesus sitting next to him. The former president’s Truth Social post was a screenshot from the X account of Trump-fan Dom Lucre, who posted the image along with the caption: “This is the most accurate court sketch of all time. Because nobody could have made it this far alone.” Trump earlier used his platform to call the case brought against him and his company by New York Attorney General Letitia James “THE CONTINUATION OF THE GREATEST WITCH HUNT OF ALL TIME.” It’s not clear if he genuinely considers Jesus—depicted in his post with white skin and dressed like Obi-Wan Kenobi—to be on his side in the case.
