French left runs divided, weakened in presidential race

Source: Associated Press

PARIS (AP) — The French left runs divided and weakened in the presidential race as at least five main candidates rejected any alliance with each other — and an online vote meant to pick a leader Sunday appears doomed to fail.

The so-called Popular Primary has been organized by left-wing supporters as an initiative meant to unite their ranks before the election scheduled in two rounds on April 10 and 24.

More than 460,000 people registered for the primary. Results of the four-day online vote are expected on Sunday evening. But the move already appears bound to fail: key contenders said they wouldn’t respect the outcome because they don’t respect the process.

At least five main figures from the left and the far-left are running for president, in addition to smaller candidates. At the moment, none of them appears in a position to reach the runoff in April’s election.

Feds: Kansas woman led all-female Islamic State battalion

Source: Associated Press

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) — A woman who once lived in Kansas has been arrested after federal prosecutors charged her with joining the Islamic State group and leading an all-female battalion of AK-47 wielding militants.

The U.S. Attorney in Alexandria, Virginia, announced Saturday that Allison Fluke-Ekren, 42, has been charged with providing material support to a terrorist organization.

The criminal complaint was filed under seal back in 2019 but made public Saturday after Fluke-Ekren was brought back to the U.S. Friday to face charges. Her alleged participation in the Islamic State had not been publicly known before Saturday’s announcement.

Prosecutors say Fluke-Ekren wanted to recruit operatives to attack a college campus in the U.S. and discussed a terrorist attack on a shopping mall.

An affidavit from FBI Special Agent David Robins also alleges that Fluke-Ekren became leader of an Islamic State unit called “Khatiba Nusaybah” in the Syrian city of Raqqa in late 2016. The all-female unit was trained in the use of AK-47 rifles, grenades and suicide belts.

Federal court blocks Alabama's new congressional map

Source: CNN

(CNN)A federal court blocked Alabama's newly drawn congressional map on Monday, ruling that it likely violates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act because it only includes one district where Black voters have the opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice.

The order gives the legislature 14 days to draw a new map that includes "two districts in which Black voters either comprise a voting-age majority or something quite close to it."

The court also delayed the state's ballot qualification deadline from January 28 to February 11.

If Monday's decision stands, it will likely lead to Democrats gaining a seat in the House from Alabama this November

L.A. Just Ran the U.S.'s Biggest Free-Transit Experiment

Source: Curbed

In March 2020, Los Angeles' public-transit agency, Metro, stopped collecting fares on its buses as a COVID-19 safety precaution.

Fare collection restarted last week after two unprecedented years in which transit agencies learned a lot about how people moved around their cities, and now Metro is using some of this information to game out improvements and pilot other free- and reduced-fare programs.

L.A.'s Metro is unique among large U.S. transit agencies in that its budget doesn't rely heavily on the fare box, which made the decision to temporarily waive fares a bit easier in the first place

Oil prices will surge to $100 this year, Goldman Sachs warns

Source: CNN

Goldman Sachs is now calling for oil prices to hit $100 a barrel later this year and continue rising in 2023, signaling higher prices at the pump are on the way.

That's why Goldman now expects Brent crude, the world benchmark, will hit $100 a barrel in the third quarter of this year, up from the bank's prior call for $80. Goldman sees Brent hitting $105 a barrel next year, up from a previous forecast of $85. Brent climbed another 0.7% on Tuesday to $87.23 a barrel.

"Importantly, we are not forecasting Brent trading above $100/bbl on an argument of running out of oil as the shale resources is still large and elastic," Goldman Sachs strategists wrote.

Goldman Sachs said shale oil will "Likely require ever rising oil prices given the reluctance to invest in oil during the energy transition" and the gradual depletion of shale capacity over time.
