Florida town installs red-light camera outside hospital entrance to target dying speeders

Citizens of Tamarac, Florida are outraged after learning that the city placed a red-light camera at an intersection outside of a hospital emergency room.

An investigation by Local 10 revealed that townspeople racing to the emergency room with legitimate medical ailments have been ticketed by the automated system on multiple occasions.

Local 10 spoke to Jacob Alcahe, who said that he had shooting pains running down his arm and trouble breathing. He said he rushed to University Hospital, fearing he was having a heart attack: “I really couldn’t breathe, I was sweating, just a lot of things going on.”

A few weeks later, Alcahe said he received a ticket in the mail from a camera on University Drive, which had apparently captured him running the red light at the hospital’s entrance.

“I was just kind of scared and I wanted to get to the hospital as soon as possible,” he told Local 10.

Alcahe attempted to challenge the ticket — even bringing his hospital discharge papers to the hearing — but was told by city officials that his possible heart attack “wasn’t a good enough excuse.”

Tamarac Mayor Harry Dressler denied that the city is taking advantage of desperate people in desperate circumstances. “The city is not condoning anything,” he said. “Neither are we preying on anyone.”

Kentucky Baptist churches giving away guns to lure ‘unchurched men’ to Jesus

The Kentucky Baptist Convention is organizing gun giveaways across the state in an effort to help “unchurched men” find Jesus Christ.

Chuck McAlister, a former Outdoor Channel hunting show host who is in charge of the effort, told The Courier-Journal that 1,678 men have already made “professions of faith” at “Second Amendment Celebrations,” where they showed up hoping to get guns as door prizes in the last year.

On Thursday, Lone Oak Baptist Church in Paducah was planning to giveaway another 25 handguns and shotguns. And organizers expected as many as 1,000 people to attend.

“The day of hanging a banner in front of your church and saying you’re having a revival and expecting the community to show up is over,” McAlister explained to the paper. “You have to know the hook that will attract people, and hunting is huge in Kentucky… So we get in there and burp and scratch and talk about the right to bear arms and that stuff.”

The Courier-Journal points to an Internet video of McAlister speaking to Silverdale Baptist Church’s men’s wildlife supper last year in Tennessee last year. The 30 minute talk focuses on hunting and opposition to gun control, but makes little mention of Jesus or religion.

“How many of y’all own guns?” he asks the crowd.

“That is awesome,” McAlister responds to the raised hands. “We’ve got an army right here!”

The paper reported that 103 men made “salvation decisions” to accept Christ as their savior after the meeting.

But not everyone thinks that using guns to sell God is great idea.

Ca. Gov. Jerrry Brown: World is ‘too dangerous’ for a nation of potheads

Appearing on NBC’s Meet The Press, California Governor Jerry Brown said that he was not prepared to completely legalize marijuana in his state.

Asked by host David Gregory if legalizing marijuana was “a good idea or a bad idea for California?”, Brown replied that he would like to wait and see what happens in Colorado and Washington, two states that recently liberalized their marijuana laws.

“Well, we have medical marijuana, which gets very close to what they have in Colorado and Washington,” he said. “I’d really like those two states to show us how it’s going to work.”

The governor then cautioned against the state giving marijuana ‘legitimacy’.

The problem with anything, a certain amount is okay. But there is a tendency to go to extremes. And all of a sudden, if there’s advertising and legitimacy, how many people can get stoned and still have a great state or a great nation? The world’s pretty dangerous, very competitive,” Brown explained. “I think we need to stay alert, if not 24 hours a day, more than some of the potheads might be able to put together.
