Wall Street slides at open as Trump warns of new tariffs on China

(Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell at open on Friday after President Donald Trump threatened to slap new tariffs on China over the coronavirus crisis, while Apple and Amazon became the latest companies to warn of more pain in the future.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average .DJI fell 224.94 points, or 0.92%, at the open to 24,120.78.
The S&P 500 .SPX opened lower by 43.34 points, or 1.49%, at 2,869.09. The Nasdaq Composite .IXIC dropped 208.26 points, or 2.34%, to 8,681.29 at the opening bell.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. manufacturing activity plunged to an 11-year low in April as the novel coronavirus wreaked havoc on supply chains, supporting analysts’ views the economy was sinking deeper into recession.
The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said on Friday its index of national factory activity dropped to a reading of 41.5 last month from 49.1 in March. That was the lowest level since April 2009, just a few months before the Great Recession ended. A reading below 50 indicates contraction in the manufacturing sector, which accounts for 11% of the U.S. economy.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the index falling to 36.9 in April. The smaller-than-expected drop in the ISM index was because the survey’s measure of supplier deliveries surged to a reading of 76.0 last month from 65.0 in March.
A lengthening in suppliers’ delivery times is normally associated with a strong economy and increased customer demand, which would be a positive contribution. But in this case slower supplier deliveries indicate supply shortages related to the coronavirus pandemic and not stronger demand.

Trump's press secretary claims 'not a single American died' from ventilator shortage

Newly appointed White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany described Trump's slow response to the virus as a 'success.'
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany on Wednesday tried to create a new measure of success for the Trump administration's response to the coronavirus crisis that has resulted in more than 61,0000 deaths.
McEnany told reporters during a press gaggle that "the success story is that this administration mobilized the greatest efforts since WWII that we provided something like 4,000 ventilators to New York."
"Not a single American died in this country for lack of a ventilator," she claimed. "I would call that response a success."
McEnany was responding to a question about Donald Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who on Tuesday described Trump's response to the crisis as "a great success story."

Marsha Blackburn is following the GOP's playbook in blaming China for the coronavirus.
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) suggested on Thursday that the United States should consider defaulting on its debt to China as punishment for the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a Fox Business interview, host Stuart Varney said that she had suggested that the United States "not repay them the trillion dollars that we owe them." That, he said, would be "abrogating America's debt."
He added, "We've never done that before."
Blackburn responded by saying many Tennesseans are out of work and the pandemic has cost the U.S. economy trillions of dollars. She blamed China for the situation: "What China has done is a tremendous cost. Should we consider doing this? Yes, indeed," she said. "It is something we should explore as to how to hold them accountable."

Lindsey Graham won't stop attacking workers who've lost their jobs

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) threatened that unemployment benefits for those impacted by the coronavirus crisis would only be extended "over our dead bodies."
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) continued to attack laid-off workers in the middle of a health crisis, vowing that he would do everything he could to block an extension of additional unemployment benefits once they expire at the end of July.
"July the 31st is when this expires and I promise you, over our dead bodies, this will get reauthorized," Graham said in front of South Carolina's COVID-19 advisory team on Tuesday.
Graham argued that the benefits are so generous that people will opt to receive them rather than go to work, and called them an "aberration" he promised to fix.
Graham is unhappy that the CARES Act, the $2 trillion coronavirus relief package passed by Congress in late March, adds $600 per week to unemployment benefits provided by states through the end of July. He and 46 of his Republican colleagues voted for an amendment to reduce unemployment benefits in the bill, but their effort failed.

Over 30 million Americans have filed jobless claims in the past six weeks.
More than 30 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits in the past six weeks, as the economy craters during the coronavirus pandemic. But based on their campaign websites, Donald Trump and a number of his Republican allies are still running for election on pre-COVID-19 job numbers and Trump's 2017 tax cuts bill.
As of April 14, the website of Trump's 2020 reelection campaign contained a section bragging about the "lowest" unemployment in years and said Trump had "jump-started America's economy into record growth" and millions of new jobs. At that point, about 17 million Americans had filed new unemployment insurance claims, wiping out the 6.1 million new jobs Trump claimed to have created.
The Trump campaign had not updated its "Promises Kept" microsite to reflect the current situation as of Thursday morning despite multiple inquiries about the figures. Indeed, the most recent news update in the section was posted in late January, five days after Trump's claim that he was not concerned about the coronavirus because "we have it totally under control."
A review of other Republican campaign websites revealed similar outdated information about employment numbers. These are some of the House and Senate candidates still running on Trump's vanished job growth and on tax cuts for the wealthy.

Republican lawmakers in Louisiana are taking extreme measures to try to end social distancing measures in their state.
Republican state lawmakers in Louisiana are trying to repeal Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards' public health emergency declaration in an effort to end social distancing measures in their state, an extreme move that would also end federal funding to help the state deal with the economic fallout from the coronavirus, the Baton Rouge Advocate reported Wednesday.
The move is part of a growing trend among GOP lawmakers across the country who are trying to undo coronavirus-related public safety measures implemented by Democratic governors — before public health experts say it's safe.
Those Republican lawmakers are frustrated with the stay-at-home orders public health experts recommend to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The measures have decimated the economy, causing at least 30 million people to lose their jobs.
However, Louisiana's GOP-controlled Legislature is going a step further by trying to repeal the public health emergency altogether, even though more than 28,000 cases of the coronavirus have been reported in the state as well as more than 1,800 deaths, according to the Advocate.
