Record-breaking US astronaut and crew back on Earth

Source: Raw Story

NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson and two crewmates made a parachute touchdown in Kazakhstan on Saturday, capping a career-total 665 days in orbit, a U.S. record.

Whitson, 57, ended an extended stay of more than nine months aboard the International Space Station, a $100 billion research laboratory that flies about 250 miles (400 km) above Earth.

“I feel great,” the biochemist said during an inflight interview on Monday. “I love working up here. It’s one of the most gratifying jobs I’ve ever had.”

During her third mission aboard the station, Whitson spent much of her time on experiments, including studies of cancerous lung tissue and bone cells. She also completed four spacewalks, adding to her six previous outings, to set a record for the most time spent spacewalking by a woman.

We were literally on the helicopter: Journo who flew with Coast Guard owns Trump over anti-press j

Source: Raw Story

On Saturday, as President Donald Trump took a tour of the damage of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, he paid a compliment to the U.S. Coast Guard while taking a left-handed jab at the media.

According to The Hill, the president said, “I hear the Coast Guard saved 11,000 people” to a crowd of Coast Guard and other first responders at Houston’s Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base.

“Think of it, almost 11,000 people by going into winds that the media would not go into,” Trump went on before gesturing toward the assembled media personnel covering the event.

“They will not go into those winds, unless it’s a really good story,” he said, not letting the fact that he was purportedly on a relief mission get in the way of a chance to address a petty gripe or perceived slight.

Huffington Post’s Andy Campbell — who flew with a Coast Guard rescue unit on a mission to save 33 critically ill children — responded, “We were literally on the helicopter with them.”

Bannons entry into Alabama race adds to Republican headaches

September 2, 2017

Following Steve Bannon's ousting from the White House two weeks ago, an editor at the publication he formerly ran, Breitbart, sent an ominous one world tweet: "War." Within hours Bannon was back at the influential far-right media company and within a week he had started to put that prophetic tweet into action. His chosen battleground was Alabama and a Senate race already teeming with national interest and subplots.

At a closed-door meeting in Washington last week, Bannon told a group of influential conservatives to throw their support behind the anti-establishment, evangelical-favorite Roy Moore in the battle to earn the Republican nomination to take Jeff Sessions’ Senate seat.

In doing so, he further entrenched Alabama as the latest scene of a proxy war over the direction of the Republican Party. And it puts the attention squarely on Trump as to on which side he will now swing. The president is for the time being aligned with Moore's opponent, incumbent Senator and establishment-backed Luther Strange. But, amid a deepening feud with his own party and reports that he is sneaking phone calls to Bannon, Trump's allegiance is far from secure.

That has become truer than ever with the Bannon and Breitbart machine aimed squarely at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. In Alabama, at least, Trump finds himself sitting uneasily in the McConnell camp, having surprisingly endorsed Strange earlier this month ahead of the GOP primary. A runoff between Strange and Moore will take place September 26.

Who does that sh*t?: Twitter cant believe Trump told a shelter full of Harvey victims to Have a

Source: Raw Story

On Saturday afternoon, President Donald Trump made his second trip to Houston, TX in a week, perhaps hoping for a “do over” on his first visit, at which his performance was so desultory and lackluster that it was entirely overshadowed by his wife’s choice of shoes for the outing.

On his second visit, Trump touched actual Texas children, handed out styrofoam containers of food — but not without getting in a dig at the media — and did his best to play the role of a strong and competent leader who wouldn’t rack up a perfect score on the “Are You a Sociopath?” test.

And it would have worked, too, if he hadn’t stopped on the way out the door to tell everyone huddled in the shelter with the few meager belongings they have that aren’t soaked in mud, poop and toxic chemicals to “Have a good time.”

Trump interrupts Harvey relief mission to snipe at press about the size of his hands

Source: Raw Story

President Donald Trump may have managed to act somewhat more presidential on his Saturday trip to Houston, TX to meet with survivors of Hurricane Harvey, but he couldn’t resist a sideways remark at the press about a long-running gripe.

The Hill reported Saturday that while he was donning plastic gloves to help serve food to hurricane refugees, the first pair of gloves he was handed were too small.

“My hands are too big,” he said to the assembled scrum of media, referring to a long-running jab from former Spy magazine editor Graydon Carter — now the editor of Vanity Fair — who in the 1980s called Trump a “short-fingered vulgarian.”

Voter arrested at GOPers town hall for asking how hed feel if his daughter was abducted by ICE l

Source: Raw Story

Republican Senator Pat Toomey’s first town hall meeting in months resulted in multiple charges for a voter who asked a provocative hypothetical question.

“A Northampton man was not only pulled from Thursday night’s televised town hall with U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), he was also arrested,” Lehigh Valley Live reports.

Simon Radecki, 28, of Northampton County, Pennsylvania faces charges of disorderly conduct and disrupting a public meeting. The town hall was televised by community-owned public television station PBS39.

“Toomey answered 20 questions during the hour-long event, one of which ended in Redecki being escorted from the meeting after he suggested that the senator’s daughter, Bridget, was abducted while posing a question on immigration,” Philadelphia Voice reported. “Radecki took to Facebook afterward to share the full question that came around 40 minutes into PBS39’s broadcast.”

Right-wingers attack Womens March co-organizer for posting link to help Harvey victims

Even by the hair-trigger standards of what’s considered offensive on social media, the tweet sent by activist Linda Sarsour on Monday evening was benign, a plea for her 231,000 followers to donate to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The tweet included a link to a web page for the Hurricane Harvey Community Relief Fund.

Almost immediately, however, Sarsour became the target of attacks by political opponents who accused her of funneling relief money to a leftist political organization. The outrage spread from Twitter to conservative outlets like The Daily Caller and National Review, whose Alexandra DeSanctis branded Sarsour a heartless dissembler “unable to pass up any opportunity to make a quick buck.”

Law prof explains legal reasoning why Trumps new memo puts Mike Pence in legal jeopardy for impea

Fordham University Law professor Jed Shugerman made one of the most damning case against Vice President Mike Pence for being involved in obstruction of justice.

The New York Times and Washington Post both broke stories about the original memo that President Donald Trump authored during a rainy day that would ultimately fire former FBI Director James Comey.

Shugerman told MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell that the biggest name that has been associated with this memo and this conversation is Pence.

“Let me explain why this timeline puts him in legal jeopardy,” Shugerman began. “So, we know that this letter was drafted on one day, and then after Steven Miller came back with that draft, it was read in a room of people, including Vice President Pence. And when that letter was read, it had, quote, The New York Times talks about a screed, and it identified all of these other connections to the Russian probe for why Trump had decided to fire Jim Comey. Then after this letter is edited, Mike Pence then tells the media that the Comey firing was not connected to the Russian probe, and he said it was due to Rod Rosenstein’s recommendation. Those statements are untrue.”

He explained that because Pence heard the first letter and the second letter and lied about it, it now “implicates Mike Pence now in a combination of conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice, aiding and abetting obstruction of justice, and also a relatively less known felony called misprision of a felony.”

Can this South Dakota shelter heal the centuries-long trauma of Native women?

It started as an unwanted, quixotic mission, but Lisa Heth couldn’t quit it. Although she’d long wanted to create programming and a shelter to serve Native American victims of sex trafficking, buying a decaying 1970s motel was definitely not part of her dream.

The Pathfinder Center opened in July on the Crow Creek reservation and, like so many other impossible dreams here, was fueled primarily by grassroots dedication and spirit. Its mission is to provide refuge for victims of sex trafficking from all over South Dakota, both Native and non-Native.

Most mainstream shelters aren’t equipped to serve sex trafficking victims. Their needs – such as longer-term housing, emotional and mental healthcare as well as addiction counseling – are beyond the resources of the average refuge.

In this case, a long-passed generation of Native American women suffered the shame and degradation of sexual violence and sex trafficking that their descendants still suffer today. It is they in particular who need providers to understand the role historical trauma plays in their recovery.
