Maersk considers suspending container shipments to Russia

Source: Reuters

COPENHAGEN, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Shipping group Maersk (MAERSKb.CO) said on Monday it was considering suspending all container bookings in and out of Russia in response to Western economic sanctions on Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine.

The company said it was closely monitoring the fast-evolving sanctions and restrictions imposed against Russia, and making preparations to comply with them.

"Our preparations include a possible suspension of Maersk bookings to and from Russia on ocean and inland," Maersk said in a statement.

Maersk, which handles roughly one in six containers shipped worldwide, said it was focusing on safeguarding types of containers and cold chain operations that "include important goods such as groceries and pharmaceuticals."

This would be a significant blow to Russia in many ways.

Roanoke College Poll: McAuliffe 47% Youngkin 46%

Just a few days before Election Day, the race for Virginia governor is a statistical tie. Former Democrat Gov. Terry McAuliffe holds a 1-percentage point lead over Republican Glenn Youngkin (47%-46%) with 6% undecided, according to The Roanoke College Poll.[1] The downticket races are also within the margin of error, with Del. Hala Ayala (D) ahead of former Del. Winsome Sears (R) 46%-44% for lieutenant governor and Attorney General Mark Herring (D) leading Del. Jason Miyares (R) 46%-45% in the race for attorney general. The Institute for Policy and Opinion Research interviewed 571 likely Virginia voters between October 14 and October 28 and has a margin of error of +4.1%.

VA early vote estimate: Dem voters: 54.7% Repub voters: 30.4%

Tom Bonier, who runs the Democratic data firm TargetSmart, estimates that 54.7 percent of those who have cast ballots already are Democratic voters and 30.4 percent are Republican voters. That’s a bigger advantage than President Biden built in 2020, when early Democratic voters outnumbered early Republican voters by a 9-point edge.

But the overall share of voters casting early votes is likely to be lower than the share who did so in 2020.

Last year, the 2.8 million early votes cast represented almost 63 percent of total ballots cast. This year, the total early vote — likely to land somewhere around 850,000 votes — is probably going to wind up as closer to a third of total ballots cast.

So McAuliffe has probably built a higher wall among early voters, but the Election Day wave is going to be taller than it was last year.

That's a huge lead going into election day, but lets hope VA Dems who havent voted yet also show up on election day to make sure we win this thing.

Senate voting now on infrastructure bill

This is the final vote and is expected to pass. If passed it goes to the House. Then to Biden.

I have heard a few R's voting "aye". All we need is 51 votes so looks good.

Drivng along H street in front of Whitehouse today.

We drove around DC today and passed by the WH on H street which is the closest anyone can get to the WH these days. Here are a few shots of the fence on H street.

There were also lots of police cars everywhere. But no issues. It was a different vibe today in DC. People seemed to be upbeat for obvious reasons. There were lots of folks like us driving around and walking around the city just to take in the new feeling of optimism. It was a refreshing and uplifting feeling.

I wonder if the FBI relocation plan is back on the table now that Trump is gone.

I think the only reason it stalled was due to Trump not wanting a big hotel built on the current FBI location that would compete with his hotel and I think also to penalize the FBI for not doing what he wanted. It appeared to be entirely personal. Seems to me with Trump out the picture the plan will get revived.
