Modi Orders 3-Week Total Lockdown for All 1.3 Billion Indians

Modi Orders 3-Week Total Lockdown for All 1.3 Billion Indians

With four hours’ notice, India’s prime minister announced that no one could leave their homes for 21 days — the most severe step taken anywhere in the war against the coronavirus.

“There will be a total ban of coming out of your homes,” the prime minister, Narendra Modi, announced on television Tuesday night, giving Indians less than four hours’ notice before the order took effect at 12:01 a.m.

“Every state, every district, every lane, every village will be under lockdown,” Mr. Modi said.

The breadth and depth of such a challenge is staggering in a country where hundreds of millions of citizens are destitute and countless millions live in packed urban areas with poor sanitation and weak public health care.

Though India’s number of reported coronavirus infections remains relatively low — around 500 — the fear is that, should the virus hit as it has in the United States, Europe or China, the consequences would lead to a disaster far bigger than anywhere else.

Priest Dies After Giving Ventilator to Younger Patient

Priest Dies After Giving Ventilator to Younger Patient
Father Giuseppe Berardelli did not know the man he gave his ventilator to

(NEWSER) – A priest infected with the coronavirus was offered a ventilator at an Italian hospital earlier this month, but declined it so that a younger patient could use it instead. That priest has now died, USA Today reports. Don Giuseppe Berardelli, 72, had been the archpriest of the small northern town of Casnigo, near Milan, since 2006. Northern Italy has struggled with a shortage of the supplies needed to treat COVID-19 patients. The BBC reports at least 50 priests have reportedly been killed in the outbreak in Italy.

"He was a priest who listened to everyone, he knew how to listen, whoever turned to him knew that he could count on his help," says the mayor of a town where Berardelli was previously a parish priest. Rev. James Martin compared Berardelli to Maximilian Kolbe, the Catholic saint who was killed during the Holocaust when he volunteered to take the place of a man condemned to die at Auschwitz. "Don Giuseppe Berardelli, patron of those who suffer from coronavirus and all who care for them, pray for us!" he tweeted. Berardelli did not know the man for whom he reportedly gave up the ventilator. (Read more coronavirus stories.)

Trump claiming that more Americans will die by suicide if lockdown continues

At one point Trump claimed, without evidence, that more Americans would die by suicide if the country remained on lockdown than would be killed by "the flu."

"You're going to lose a number of people to the flu, but you're going to lose more people by putting a country in a massive recession or depression," he said. "You're going to have suicides by the thousands. You're going to have all sorts of things happen."

coalition of anti-abortion rights groups want abortion providers 2 "cease operations" & donate equip

A coalition of anti-abortion rights groups is asking federal health officials to urge abortion providers to shut down during the coronavirus outbreak.

In a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, dozens of national conservative groups opposed to abortion rights call on federal health officials to urge abortion providers to "cease operations" and donate medical equipment like masks and hospital gowns to the coronavirus response. Signers include the Susan B. Anthony List, the American Center for Law and Justice, and the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.

The letter also asks officials to make sure that access to medication abortion is not expanded via telemedicine or other methods as a result of the pandemic, and that emergency response funds are not given to abortion providers.

It follows actions by Republican governors and attorneys general in Texas and Ohio, who've ordered clinics in their states to stop performing most abortions as part of a larger effort to preserve personal protective equipment, or PPE, for medical professionals caring for COVID-19 patients.

In other states, such as Massachusetts and New Jersey, officials have explicitly clarified that abortion is not subject to orders postponing non-essential and elective procedures during the pandemic.
