Walmart male "Karen" costs them 4.4 million under new anti profiling law

Walmart is ordered to pay $4.4million in damages to black man shopping for a light bulb after store employee profiled and harassed him then called cops when he refused to leave

Mangum, who was 59 at the time, visited the Walmart in Wood Village on March 26, 2020, to buy a light bulb for his refrigerator.

The litigation was a landmark test of a recently passed state law allowing lawsuits against anyone who improperly calls law enforcement with the intent to discriminate, his lawyers said.

After Mangum arrived, he noticed store employee Joe Williams watching him as he shopped.

Williams told Mangum to leave the store, but Mangum refused, saying he'd done nothing wrong.

Mangum's lawyers said Williams told Mangum he was going to call the police and tell them Mangum had threatened to 'smash him in the face.'

Williams called the non-emergency police dispatch line and told the operator he 'had a person refusing to leave,' the lawsuit states.

But according to Mangum's lawyers, deputies from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office responded and 'refused to take action against Mangum.'

The lawyers said deputies made that decision based on Williams' 'shifting explanations' for the reason he called and because of his 'reputation for making false reports to police.'

According to Mangum's lawyers, the next day, Sheriff's Sergeant Bryan White and another deputy met with the director of the Walmart and the assistant manager and explained that deputies had noticed a 'pattern of behavior' in which Williams would call police to report 'dangerous active situations, such as customers physically assaulting him or other employees,' that were not happening.

2 artists tape banana to wall, now in Federal court. Poll... who did it best?

2 Artists Tape Banana to Wall, and Now It's in Federal Court
Odd legal fight is between American artist Joe Morford and Italian Maurizio Cattelan

Morford ------------------------------ ------------------ ---------------- Cattelan

It's not often the worlds of art, the law, and duct-taped fruit intersect, but here we are. A California artist named Joe Morford is suing Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, claiming that Cattelan stole his idea about taping a banana to a wall, reports the Guardian. Last month, a federal judge in Florida waded into the dispute and rejected Cattelan's request to toss the suit, per CNN. If this is ringing vague bells, it's because Cattelan made big headlines a few years ago when he affixed an ordinary banana to a wall with duct tape at an art exhibit in Miami and sold three versions of it for an astonishing $390,000.

The feat caught the attention of Morford. "I did this in 2000," he wrote on Facebook, including an image as proof. "But some dude steals my junk and pimps it for 120K+ in 2019. Plagiarism much?" Federal judge Robert Scola is now tasked with deciding whether Cattelan did indeed steal the idea, per Artnet News. The "question of whether a banana taped to a wall can be art is more a metaphysical question than a legal one," he wrote in allowing the suit to proceed. "But the legal question before the court may be just as difficult—did Morford sufficiently allege that Cattelan's banana infringes his banana?"

Cattelan argues that his work, called "Comedian," is different enough from Morford's "Banana & Orange"—as the name suggests, Morford also duct-taped an orange to a wall as part of his piece—and rejects the idea that anyone can copyright a taped banana. However, the judge isn't so sure about all aspects of that argument. "Morford cannot claim copyright in the idea of a banana taped to a wall," he mused, but "Morford may be able to claim copyright in the expression of that idea." Morford is seeking $390,000 in damage, plus court costs. (Fun fact: Somebody ate one of Cattelan's bananas.)

Suburban voters are key for Doug Mastriano. His abortion views seem to be turning them off

https://whyy.org/articles/pennsylvania-suburban-voters-abortion-mastriano-election-2022/

Many suburban Republicans say they are having a hard time bringing themselves to vote for their party’s nominee for governor, Doug Mastriano. And several voters and political operatives doing on-the-ground outreach say his stance on abortion is a big reason why.

In this race to lead purple Pennsylvania, the difference between the candidates is stark.

Mastriano, a state senator, opposes abortion under all circumstances. His Democratic opponent, Attorney General Josh Shapiro, says he wants to maintain Pennsylvania’s current law: Abortion is legal up to about 24 weeks of gestation, with later-term abortions permitted in case of a medical emergency.

Stacy Naulty is one of those voters for whom a total ban is a problem. She’s 43 and lives near Lansdale, a Montgomery County town about an hour from Philadelphia, with her four kids. She supported Donald Trump in both 2016 and 2020.

-------------

But it’s his stance on abortion that she finds especially unacceptable, even as a person who generally supports abortion laws being up to states.

------------

Ramer said that in the suburbs, abortion feels like the kind of issue that will peel away voters who might have supported another GOP candidate.

“Even if they consider themselves pro-life — which, many people in our organization consider themselves pro-life — Doug Mastriano’s stance on abortion is incredibly extreme,” he said, adding that in focus groups, these kinds of voters seem happy to vote for a conventional Democrat like Josh Shapiro when Mastriano is the alternative.
“I do think he will take it to the extreme and completely shut abortion down altogether, and that’s not an answer these days,” she said. “People rape children. You’re going to have her, you know, have a baby out of that situation?”

“No,” she said. “It’s not OK.”

------------------------

Cara Alderfen, a registered Republican who lives in the Perkasie area, in Bucks County, said she doesn’t really care how Mastriano frames his abortion views. Any level of support for rolling back abortion rights, she said, is “the nail in the coffin for me.”

"Karen" and "Joe the Manager" action figures

https://nypost.com/2022/08/15/karens-can-now-speak-to-the-manager-with-their-own-action-figure/

The company enlisted the help of freelance Ukrainian designer, Denys Samboval, to bring the much-despised persona to life.

“I take inspiration from the everyday,” Samboval said of the project, adding, “We’ve all seen Karens or Joes in the news or in our daily lives, so this project was easy to relate to.”

Namespace is hoping to raise $30,000 on fundraising platform Kickstarter to secure funding for the production of the action figures, which will be sold at $18 a pop.

Billionaire says build more housing... just not near him, don't "MASSIVELY decrease our home values"

Richest Silicon Valley Suburb Says Build Anywhere But Here

Billionaire venture capitalist Marc Andreessen penned a blog post in 2020 titled “It’s Time to Build,” calling for the urgent development of new businesses, infrastructure, and housing across the US. This summer he offered a very different message in a letter to officials in Atherton, Calif., the Silicon Valley suburb he and his wife, Laura, call home. In the letter, the Andreessens expressed their “IMMENSE objection” to a proposal spurred by a new state law that would incentivize multifamily housing. “They will MASSIVELY decrease our home values,” they wrote.

Atherton is the wealthiest place in America, home to massive estates, long driveways, iron fences—and, it turns out, a lot of very angry, very rich residents, many of whom make their money in tech. Among those who submitted 270 public comments released by the city were several other prominent venture capitalists as well as onetime senior executives at Apple, Facebook, Google, SoftBank Group, and Twitter.

I don’t like the idea of being forced into a corner by a mandate based on growth, when businesses (and populations) are leaving California for more business-friendly states. — Tim Draper, venture capitalist

We have a small pool house with a bathroom, kitchen and separate living space. Have we done an inventory of those facilities available in Atherton, and will they count, and under what circumstances will they count toward any imposed additional living facilities within the town. — Dick Elkus, author and former tech executive

The crime has become so bad many families are employing private security including our family. To be clear we are writing this letter to communicate our objection to the creation of multifamily overlay zones in Atherton. — Anthony Noto, chief executive officer of SoFi

Atherton as we know it will be gone and only you have the power to stop that from happening if you care about our city. — Erik Charlton, ex-head of business at Nest Labs

In a possible hate crime, a group of 6 unidentified persons destroyed a handcrafted statue of Gandhi

In a possible hate crime, a group of six unidentified persons destroyed a handcrafted statue of Mahatma Gandhi with a sledgehammer at a Hindu temple in New York after vandalising it earlier this month.

India on Friday strongly condemned the “despicable action” and took up the matter with the U.S. authorities to ensure those responsible for the act are held accountable.

Dr. Oz's Old Tweets About Poop Have Come Back To Humiliate Him Even More Than He Has Been Already

https://uproxx.com/viral/dr-oz-poop-tweets-fetterman/

It’s been a rollercoaster summer, but one of the most delightful running gags of the season has been the repeated humiliation of congressional candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz. The former TV star wants so badly to fill a vacating Senate seat in Pennsylvania he even moved from Jersey. Unfortunately, he’s running against John Fetterman, who’s spent the last few months mercilessly, creatively trolling his opponent. But sometimes all Fetterman has to do is wait for others to dig up some dirt then do the pouncing.

Over the weekend, people dug up some old tweets Oz made when he was a television health adviser of dubious credibility. These were about poop. They might even be helpful; one’s leavings are a good sign of how healthy one is (or isn’t). Trouble is, at least one tweet, from 2013, featured a generic link to his website…which is now all about his troubled senatorial campaign. Which means that it now reads weird.

Fetterman was quick to turn the gaffe into yet another of his Oz burns.
