A Record 100,000 People in New York Homeless Shelters
An influx of migrants has contributed to record numbers of people entering the city’s shelter system.

New York City passed a woeful milestone this week, spurred by an influx of migrants from the nation’s southern border: For the first time, there are now over 100,000 people in homeless shelters here, city officials said on Wednesday.

Days earlier, the city said that the number of migrants in shelters had passed 50,000 and that, for the first time, they made up the majority of people in homeless shelters in the city.

The city, under Mayor Eric Adams, has spent over a billion dollars to house the migrants since they started arriving in large numbers in the spring of 2022. It expects to spend over $4 billion by

In all, about 1 in 80 people in the nation’s largest city does not have a permanent place to live.

The migrants are now housed at over 150 sites, including hotels, regular shelters, vast “emergency relief centers” and “respite centers” that the administration revealed last week do not have showers on site.

Crushed student loan borrowers are skipping meals, moving in with parents, panicking over money

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-06-30/supreme-court-decision-student-loan-borrowers-money-panic

Mimi Hoang rejoiced when President Biden announced plans last year to cancel thousands of dollars in student debt. The 20-year-old had taken out $30,000 in federal loans to pay for just her first year of college at Southern Oregon University, and the thought of it was weighing on her.

“It is a real burden for me to know that I carry that much from one year of school,” she said.

As she faced the prospect of tripling her loan debt by staying at Southern Oregon, Hoang decided to move back to her family’s home in Hayward last academic year and enroll at a community college. Biden’s plan would have slashed Hoang’s debt to a more manageable $10,000.

But her hope of relief — and the hopes of millions of borrowers across the country who owe a collective $1.6 trillion in federal student loans — were crushed Friday when the Supreme Court blocked Biden’s plan. In a 6-3 ruling in Biden vs. Nebraska, the conservative majority ruled only Congress could authorize such a large-scale cancellation of loans provided by the federal government, which it had not done.

“It’s something that still follows me throughout my day-to-day life,” Hoang said. “It fills me with a lot of anxiety and stress.”

Jemeryas Jordan, 24, was aware of the political forces surrounding the president’s plan. But for a year he had allowed himself to dream. If the court had upheld student loan forgiveness, the TikTok creator could pour money into his content with new camera equipment, microphones and a laptop.

A California scholar's research into a flowering shrub took him to Mexico and a violent death

https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/a-california-scholar-s-research-into-a-flowering-18178541.php

LOS ANGELES (AP) — For four years, Gabriel Trujillo trekked the breadth of the United States and south into Mexico in search of a flowering shrub called the common buttonbush.

The plant is native to the varied climates of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. Trujillo, a 31-year-old Ph.D. student at the University of California, Berkeley, wanted to know why it thrived in such a range of places, and whether the evolution of the species held possibilities for future habitat conservation and restoration efforts.

The research was tragically cut short last week in Mexico, where Trujillo’s father said he was shot seven times. Authorities discovered his body on June 22 in the state of Sonora, in northwest Mexico, days after his fiancée reported him missing.

The killing has left the family reeling and searching for answers in a case that has yet again highlighted the rampant violence that plagues Mexico locations controlled by drug cartels.

Ron DeSantis faces one setback after another in battle against LGBTQ rights

https://news.yahoo.com/ron-desantis-faces-one-setback-212154484.html

Multiple federal court decisions have frozen key portions of Ron DeSantis’ campaign against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights in recent weeks, complicating the Florida governor’s efforts to present himself as a conservative champion with a track record of winning cultural battles over LGBTQ causes.

In the last week alone, the DeSantis administration faced setbacks in three legal battles over LGBTQ rights. Judges rejected state efforts to block transgender adults’ access to gender-affirming care under Medicaid, bar transgender children from accessing puberty blockers, and ban minors from certain types of live entertainment at restaurants — legislation widely interpreted as a proposal to target drag shows.

DeSantis’ agenda has hit other roadblocks, with judges blocking portions of his plans to control teaching and training on gender identity in schools and workplaces. The governor also faces ongoing litigation over his efforts to ban transgender athletes from competing on sports teams of their declared gender and to restrict access to school books, including those with LGBTQ themes.

Submarine ceo fired the safety guy for talking too much about safety

David Lochridge was fired after he raised concerns about Titan's safety

OceanGate also refused to have the vessel 'classed' by an independent organization that would ensure it met accepted technical standards

ensure vessels like ships and submersibles meet industry-wide technical standards. It is a crucial way of ensuring a vessel is fit to operate.

In a blog post titled 'Why Isn't Titan Classed?', OceanGate suggested classification would take too long.

The post said: 'While classing agencies are willing to pursue the certification of new and innovative designs and ideas, they often have a multi-year approval cycle due to a lack of pre-existing standards…

'Bringing an outside entity up to speed on every innovation before it is put into real-world testing is anathema to rapid innovation.'

The company said its 'innovations' included a real-time (RTM) hull health monitoring system which is 'not currently covered by any classing agency'.

Melting snow initiates huge new search for actor Julian Sands missing 5 months

https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/julian-sands-saerch-mount-baldy-18161540.php

The snow is finally melting on the slopes of Mount Baldy, the treacherous California mountain that marks the last known location of British actor Julian Sands.

After the historic storms of this past winter, the changing seasons enabled a massive search crew to renew its efforts to find the actor, who disappeared on the mountainside in January.

“Saturday’s search included over 80 Search and Rescue volunteers, deputies, and staff,” the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said yesterday in a news release of this weekend’s search. “Their efforts were supported by two helicopters, and drone crews.”

California restaurant brought priest to employees

Instead of confessing to what she wanted to confess about, the priest informed Parra that he would be asking her questions to "get the sins out of me," she wrote in a sworn affidavit attached to a Department of Labor lawsuit filed against the restaurant and its owners last year.

"He asked if I ever got pulled over for speeding, if I drank alcohol, or if I had stolen anything. The priest mostly had work-related questions, which I thought was strange. The priest asked if I had stolen anything at work, if I was late to my employment, if I did anything to harm my employer, and if I had any intention towards my employment," Parra said.

Taqueria Garibaldi was under investigation at the time by the Wage and Hour Department for allegedly withholding tips from its employees and for failing to pay them the required time and a half for overtime hours worked. The owners of the restaurant were also accused by the department of interfering with the investigation and threatening employees with adverse immigration consequences if they participated in the investigation.
