FYI, Trent Lott fired the Senate Parliamentarian when he ruled against him

Just an FYI.

Story from 2001:

President Biden apparently visiting Bob Dole

According to the pool report, President Biden is visiting "his close friend, Senator Bob Dole." Dole announced this week that he has stage 4 lung cancer.

The story keeps getting worse for Cruz (NYT gets Ms. Cruz texts)

NYT has texts messages Heidi Cruz sent to friends and Houston neighbors.

Their house was "FREEZING" — and she proposed a Sunday return. Cruz invited others to join them at the Ritz-Carlton in Cancún ($309 per night), where they had stayed "many times."

EDIT: From the article

Text messages sent by his wife revealed a hastily planned trip away from their “FREEZING” family home.

Text messages sent from Ms. Cruz to friends and Houston neighbors on Wednesday revealed a hastily planned trip. Their house was “FREEZING,” as Ms. Cruz put it — and she proposed a getaway until Sunday. Ms. Cruz invited others to join them at the Ritz-Carlton in Cancún, where they had stayed “many times,” noting the room price this week ($309 per night) and its good security. The text messages were provided to The New York Times and confirmed by a second person on the thread, who declined to be identified because of the private nature of the texts.

United Airlines apparently says Cruz planned to return Saturday

So we'll see if Cruz says he always planned to return today.

Two minute warning for Jen Psaki's White House press briefing - link

Starting soon. In case the cable networks don't cover it today, you can watch here at the WashPo YouTube site:

DOJ making a cyber-related national security announcement at 11:30, and at 12:30 Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber and Emerging Technology Anne Neuberger will brief with @PressSec

EDIT: This appears to be the announcement.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Justice Department charges 3 North Korean computer programmers in broad range of global hacks.

Brent Bozell's son charged for participating in the insurrection

The son of conservative activist Brent Bozell was captured on video inside the Senate chamber during the Capitol attack and has been charged with three federal offenses.

EDIT: From the linked story:

Online sleuths looked into Bozell because he wore the sweatshirt of a Christian school where he previously served as a girls' basketball coach.

I don't think you've followed the story.

- No one could call witnesses until that Saturday morning, by rule

- Schumer repeatedly told the Managers they could call witnesses if they wished.

- The House Managers decided to call one witness AND get her notes. They also reserved the right to call more witnesses.

- The Senate passed that motion

- The Managers' aides were already in the process of scheduling the deposition.

- Then after Republican threats, Coons and Manchin, and possibly others, put pressure on the Managers to not call the witness.

- The House Managers backed down and just entered her public statement in the record.

- The Trump lawyer promptly said the statement wasn't true.

THAT is what happened. Could you please get the facts right?

You don't know what the witness would have said. You don't know what her notes say. You don't know the emotional impact it would have had. It likely would have caused further glorious public arguments among Republicans.

And for those who wanted to move on to Biden's agenda, the Congress is now in recess for a week! LOL

Pelosi officially announces commission to study attack on Capitol

Is this new? I hadn't seen the announcement before.

Pelosi officially announces commission to study attack on Capitol, and an emergency spending bill for Capitol security.

EDIT: TPM has the statement as well:

"..staff for prosecutors were...on the phone trying to schedule a potential...deposition.."

Coons twice spoke to the managers during the recess, first telling the managers that a delay would cost Republican votes to convict and could even cost Senate Democratic votes. "The jury is ready to vote," Coons said. "People want to get home for Valentine's Day," according to a senior House Democratic aide.

Later, he returned again to tell the managers they should accept a deal to admit Herrera Beutler's statement into evidence and not call witnesses.

It was an important moment that did accelerate things and get the trial back on track, officials said, because it came as staff for prosecutors were already on the phone trying to schedule a potential Zoom deposition.

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia also approached a manager in the hallway to urge against moving forward with calling witnesses.

According to a Democrat familiar with the matter, the impeachment managers did not tell top Senate Democrats they wanted witnesses until five minutes before the proceedings. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer didn't even know until that point, but he told the managers Friday night and Saturday morning that Senate Democrats would support whatever decision the mangers [sic] made -- and reiterated that point on a caucus call Saturday.
