Brett Favre repays $600K in Mississippi welfare case; state still seeks $228K in interest

JACKSON, Miss. -- Retired NFL player Brett Favre has repaid $600,000 in state welfare money he accepted for speeches where he didn't appear, but the state attorney general could sue Favre if he doesn't pay interest owed on the amount, the Mississippi auditor said Wednesday.

Auditor Shad White said Favre paid the $600,000 to the auditor's office this week. White sent the former Green Bay Packers quarterback a letter Oct. 12 demanding $828,000, which was the $600,000 plus $228,000 in interest.

Of the $228,000, White said: "If he does not pay that within 30 days of our demand, the AG will be responsible for enforcing the payment of the interest in court."

White said in May 2020 that Favre, who lives in Mississippi, had repaid $500,000 of the $1.1 million in welfare money he received for multiple no-show speeches. Favre was paid by Mississippi Community Education Center, a nonprofit group whose former leader is among those awaiting trial.

(Pre) COVID Organizing Pneumonia - hadn't head of this. Elder friend diagnosed last week.

I had not heard of this. A friend of the family, and older lady, was in ICU last week and doctors weren’t sure what was going on. One physician took a look at her X-ray and history (had COVID last year) and diagnosed her as having, as I heard it called, pre-COVID Organizing Pneumonia.

She’s out of the hospital now and doing better. She was prescribed steroids which seem to be working.

SARS-CoV-2 organising pneumonia: ‘Has there been a widespread failure to identify and treat this prevalent condition in COVID-19?

https://bmjopenrespres.bmj.com/content/7/1/e000724

Abstract
Reviews of COVID-19 CT imaging along with postmortem lung biopsies and autopsies indicate that the majority of patients with COVID-19 pulmonary involvement have secondary organising pneumonia (OP) or its histological variant, acute fibrinous and organising pneumonia, both well-known complications of viral infections. Further, many publications on COVID-19 have debated the puzzling clinical characteristics of ‘silent hypoxemia’, ‘happy hypoxemics’ and ‘atypical ARDS’, all features consistent with OP. The recent announcement that RECOVERY, a randomised controlled trial comparing dexamethasone to placebo in COVID-19, was terminated early due to excess deaths in the control group further suggests patients present with OP given that corticosteroid therapy is the first-line treatment. Although RECOVERY along with other cohort studies report positive effects with corticosteroids on morbidity and mortality of COVID-19, treatment approaches could be made more effective given that secondary OP often requires prolonged duration and/or careful and monitored tapering of corticosteroid dose, with ‘pulse’ doses needed for the well-described fulminant subtype. Increasing recognition of this diagnosis will thus lead to more appropriate and effective treatment strategies in COVID-19, which may lead to a further reduction of need for ventilatory support and improved survival.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin's excellent follow up on being a college coach

He wasn't done yet. After a final call for questions, Tomlin ended on one final thought.

"Anybody asking (Saints coach) Sean Payton about that? Anybody asking (Chiefs coach) Andy Reid about stuff like that?"

Pittsburgh Steelers' Mike Tomlin emphatically ends speculation about interest in college football openings

Tomlin shut down speculation that he could be in the mix to fill college coaching vacancies at USC or LSU at the end of his weekly news conference Tuesday. "Hey, guys, I don't have time for that speculation," Tomlin said. "I mean, that's a joke to me. I got one of the best jobs in all of professional sport. Why would I have any interest in coaching college football?

"That will be the last time I address it. Not only today but moving forward. Never say never, but never. OK? Anybody else got any questions about any college jobs. There's not a booster with a big enough blank check."

Check out the "sewer monster" Richmond VA pulled out

Department of Public Utilities crews pulled the massive blob from the Shockoe Retention Basin, which holds 50 million gallons of combined sewer water from Northside before it is sent to the wastewater treatment plant, on Tuesday morning.

Utilities officials urged people to be mindful of what they flush down their toilets or dump into the James because they said the collection was alarming.

"Oh my God -- that’s all I can say,” DPU Plant Operation Superintendent Barbara Jackson said. “In the 45 years I've been here, I've never seen that much come out."

The tangle was composed mostly of wipes, towels, bottles, rocks, cigarettes and fur, according to workers.

Braves Manager Brian Snitker - 1971 Macon Ill. baseball takes almost "Hoosiers" story. Very cool.

Atlanta Braves manger Brian Snitker is from Macon Illinois (pop. 1,200) that in 1971 was still living in a pre-Beatles America existence. The high school principle hires Lynn Sweet - in and out of college Army brat turned hippie-ish - from Chicago to teach English. Never coached baseball before. The team goes on an incredible run reaching the state high school championship.
They lost 4-2 to Waukegan High (4,250 students) with Snitker grounding out to end the game.

Brian Snitker wasn't kidding when he said he resembled the Ernie Douglas character on "My Three Sons." The Snitker of 1971 also wore horned-rimmed glasses while he played. Photo courtesy of Brian Snitker.
