How I got a lifelong Republican to vote Dem. And you can too.

A good friend of mine grew up in the Midwest, and is still Midwestern even after being here in the People's Republic of Massachusetts for decades. Nice guy, but a lifelong Republican. Will readily admit that most of his party's gone nuts, but could never bring himself to vote for Democrats.

Last fall we were hanging out, and he was telling me how Scott Brown's GREAT because he's bipartisan, Warren's a Moonbat Lefty Harvard Professor, yadda, yadda, yadda... "Watch this!" I said as I popped onto YouTube, and pulled up a couple of videos of Not-Yet-Senator Warren reaming new orifices (orifi?) into Timmy Geithner, e.g.:

By the time the videos were done, Warren was a vote closer to her current job

It's been so many years since we've had FDR Democrats in office that people have forgotten what they do. Even folks in their 50s, like my buddy.

Virtually everyone knows that the banks are screwing the 99% with full bipartisan government help. There's bipartisan hatred for it among the 99%, bipartisan love for it among the 1%. Even Republicans, and certainly independents, have got to look at Warren going after these swine with both fists bared and think "@#$%, that's just what we need!".

Going into 2014 (thanks Will Pitt!) and beyond, I will make sure that I show as many Liz Warren beatdown videos to as many people that I can. Show 'em what an FDR Democrat is, and why they want one. I hope that you try it, too.

Rand Paul will FAIL, and America will WIN!

I like John Brennan. It takes a tough man to refuse to call waterboarding torture when so many on the Moonbat Left are whining about "human rights" and other impractical crap.

That's why I'm so upset that Rand Paul is filibustering this humble and decent man, on the pretense that executing Americans any time and any place is NOT the President's perogative.

Last time I checked, a President who can kill at will with zero accountability was a hallmark of the individual freedoms we cherish so dearly. Only by giving up our civil liberties can we have our civil liberties, of course. As every child learns in school:

Even worse, some so-called Democrats *agree* with Paul on this! Agreeing with a crazy Republican on anything, ever, is betrayal! These traitors are nothing but Rand Paul enablers, they disgust me. Just like those so-called Democrats who agreed with Paul's father that we shouldn't invade Iraq. Disgusting, all of them. I happen to know many elected Democrats who voted to attack Saddam JUST because the elder Paul was against it. All Democrats should learn from their courageous commitment.

It was 80 years ago today...

This is the America that Franklin Roosevelt took the helm of 80 years ago today. After decades of increasing income disparity, the bottom had fallen out under Hoover's watch. Hoover worked mightily to right the ship by bailing out banks and business, but to his great surprise, his trickle-down efforts never worked. The job creators wouldn't create jobs.

FDR entered the White House determined to create a New Deal for Americans - a deal where all Americans, not just the wealthy, could get a leg up and lead a decent life. And since 1933, that New Deal has been the very lifeblood of working Americans: As the New Deal grew and expanded, the 99% did better. As the New Deal has been unceasingly attacked and beaten back by America's elite since 1981, the lot of the 99% has fallen, fallen.

It has become fashionable lately to bash FDR. Even Democrats have joined in the fun, including our President, who claims (erroneously) that FDR let the previous depression get terrible on purpose. And while FDR had his faults, the bottom line is this: he made sure that the working class got a fair break, and he set the stage for almost 50 years of growing prosperity for all Americans.

As we listen to the growing bipartisan demand to take bigger and bigger chunks out of the New Deal, to whittle it down until it's small enough to be drowned in a bathtub, remember this: we are the New Deal, and the New Deal is us. If it dies, we die with it.

We need a new Democratic Party

Austerity has been proven to make depressions worse for the 99%. But both parties demand more austerity, now. Krugman, Stieglitz and the other reality-based economists are persona non grata.

Health care costs are twice those of other countries, crippling our wallets and our health. One party wants little people to do without health care, the other wants to cover most folks but keep prices staggeringly high through taxpayer subsidies.

The President now has sweeping powers to ignore the Constitution. Both parties are cool with that.

The wealthiest Americans continue to be taxed at incredibly low rates, far lower than many in the middle class. Both parties are all for it.

Social Security is fully funded for decades, probably for at least 75 years. Both parties want to cut benefits to keep low taxes on the wealthy.

Bankers dine regularly with the President, whose staff and cabinet are filled with other bankers on loan from Wall Street. They are treated with fawning and obsequious respect by both parties in Congress.

We expect Republicans to do this stuff, but we expect Democrats to be on our side. A few individuals *are* on our side, but precious few.

This will not be fixed by tweaks. We need to rebuild our party from the ground up.

ADDENDUM: No, I have zero interest in starting a third party. This party belongs to us, and we should keep it; it's the trespassers who need to vacate.

I still call myself a Liberal rather than a Progressive, in large part because I'll be damned if I'll let the opposition steal the word "Liberal" from me, just as I'll be damned if they'll steal my party from me. They've done all they can to turn that word into a slur, but fuck 'em - they can't have it, and we'll win the word back. We're already making progress on this.

I'm a Liberal Democrat. And that's that.
