Her family found her dead during a brutal heat wave. Her home lacked a lifesaving necessity.

Her family found her dead during a brutal heat wave. Her home lacked a lifesaving necessity.

The sun came blazing through the sliding glass door in Jollene Brown’s cramped studio apartment, a converted storage unit in southeast Portland, Oregon. As the heat started rising in late June — hotter than she could ever remember — her son, Shane Brown, hung a blanket over the glass to help block the rays, to little effect.

The $750-a-month apartment didn’t come with air conditioning, and the old floor unit that she and her son had scraped the money together to buy wasn’t working. When her son suggested getting a new one, she waved the idea away. “We’ll see,” she told him over the phone on June 27, the last time that they spoke.

-----------------------

“Please, God, let her be OK,” he thought as he drove to her home, worried that she was sick, as she suffered from cirrhosis and chronic leg swelling and needed supplemental oxygen around the clock. When he opened the door, he saw her slumped on the recliner in her pajamas, her head tilted to one side. He pulled the oxygen unit off her face and put his hand to her cheek, which felt strangely firm.

Hours later, when the medical examiner arrived, it was 100 degrees inside the apartment.

Jollene Brown, 67, was one of hundreds of people who died from this summer’s deadly heat waves in the Pacific Northwest. In Oregon, most of the 96 confirmed victims “lived alone in homes with no working air conditioning or fans,” according to a state report. (Stark Firs Management, which operates Jollene Brown’s building, didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment.)

spanish village is tired of visitors complaining of noise from church bells, roosters, live stock

Spanish village tells visitors who complain about the mess to not go there

After numerous visitors called officials of Ribadesella, Spain, to complain about the mess left behind by various animals, the village had one response...don’t come here.

“Last week we had a lady who called us three or four times over a rooster that was waking her up at 5 a.m.,” said Ramón Canal, Ribadesella’s mayor. “She told us that we had to do something.”

Town officials wanted the complaining public to know how they really felt and came up with a tongue-in-cheek poster campaign that asks the urban tourists to “assume all the risks” that come with life in the rural area, according to The Guardian.

“Here we have church bells that ring out regularly, roosters that crow early in the morning and herds of livestock that live nearby and at times carry cowbells that also make noise,” the post reads.

“If you can’t handle all this, you may not be in the right place,”

Catholic Officials on Edge After Reports of Priests Using Grindr (gay hookup app)

Catholic Officials on Edge After Reports of Priests Using Grindr
A conservative Catholic media organization, The Pillar, has published several reports claiming the use of dating apps at several churches and the Vatican.

The reports hit the Roman Catholic Church in rapid succession: Analyses of cellphone data obtained by a conservative Catholic blog seemed to show priests at multiple levels of the Catholic hierarchy in both the United States and the Vatican using the gay hookup app Grindr.

The first report, published late last month, led to the resignation of Msgr. Jeffrey Burrill, the former general secretary of the U.S. bishops’ conference. The second, posted online days later, made claims about the use of Grindr by unnamed people in unspecified rectories in the Archdiocese of Newark. The third, published days after that, claimed that in 2018 at least 32 mobile devices emitted dating app data signals from within areas of Vatican City that are off-limits to tourists.

The reports by the blog, The Pillar, have unnerved the leadership of the American Catholic Church and have introduced a potentially powerful new weapon into the culture war between supporters of Pope Francis and his conservative critics: cellphone data, which many users assume to be unavailable to the general public.

“When there is reporting out there that claims to expose activity like this in parishes around the country and also on Vatican grounds, that is a five-alarm fire for church officials, there is no doubt about it,” said John Gehring, the Catholic program director at Faith in Public Life, a progressive advocacy group.

Jeopardy! needs a new host again. Mike Richards, who was chosen to host the nightly broadcast less than two weeks ago, has resigned amid controversy, reports USA Today. Richards came under fire over newly resurfaced comments he made several years ago on his podcast that were seen as derogatory toward women and Jewish people, among others. And prior to that, he had been named in a discrimination lawsuit. Production on the new season had started Thursday and came to a halt after just one day. The show will now renew its search for a permanent host and bring back guest hosts in the meantime, per the Hollywood Reporter.

2 Former Torrance Police Officers Charged After Allegedly Painting Swastika On Back Of Impounded Vehicle

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Two former Torrance police officers have been charged with vandalism after allegedly painting a swastika on the back of a vehicle they impounded, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon announced Thursday.

In a news conference, Gascon said the officers have been charged with felony vandalism and conspiracy to commit felony vandalism. More than a dozen other officers have also been relieved of duty as part of the investigation.

“This type of conduct cannot be tolerated anywhere in our society,” Gascon said.

29-year-old Christopher Tomsic and 28-year-old Cody Weldin pleaded not guilty to charges of felony vandalism and conspiracy to commit vandalism. The city says they both left the department in 2020.

The District Attorney’s Office said the investigation into Tomsic and Weldin revealed at least 13 other officers allegedly exchanging racist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic messages. Those officers were each placed on administrative leave.

Torrance California: Hundreds of cases are being reviewed after police officers involved were relieved of duty over racist and anti-Semitic messages

On January 27, 2020, Tomsic and Weldin were allegedly among a group of officers responding to a police call regarding stolen mail, the DA's office said. The former officers were led to a vehicle and allegedly ordered for it to be impounded to a tow yard, according to the D.A.'s office. When the owner of the vehicle arrived to pick up the car, he found a happy face spray-painted on the front passenger seat, a swastika symbol spray-painted on the rear seat, and other items strewn throughout the vehicle, the statement said.

The two men were terminated in March 2020, the police chief said.

Woman Who Drove SUV Into 2 Children Due to Their Race Given 25 Years By Federal Judge

Woman Who Drove SUV Into 2 Children Due to Their Race Given 25 Years By Federal Judge
Rebecca Klapper 13 hrs ago

A white Iowa woman who said she drove her SUV into two children in 2019 to try to kill them because of their race was sentenced to 25 years in prison by a federal judge on hate crimes charges, the Associated Press reported.

-----------------------

Prosecutors said Poole Franklin targeted a 12-year-old Black boy and a 14-year-old Latina girl on December 9, 2019, in Des Moines due to their race.

Poole Franklin pleaded guilty to two federal hate crime charges in May.

-----------

Prosecutors said she first drove over a curb and struck the boy, saying she ran him over because he's "just like ISIS" and "he's not supposed to be there and he's going to take me out." She narrowly missed the boy's older sibling who was walking alongside him.

Minutes later, Poole Franklin drove up over a sidewalk, prosecutors said, striking the girl, who had bruises, cuts and a concussion. Poole Franklin said she targeted the girl because she thought she was Mexican, was taking over "our homes and our jobs" and "wasn't supposed to be in the country," the filing said.

Wis waiter surprised with $4,500 tip 2 days after receiving a homophobic message on a tip-less check

On Sunday, a customer received a $142.95 check after having dinner at a restaurant in Madison, Wis.

Even though the service was good, the customer decided not to leave a tip — leaving a hateful message for the server, instead.

“Service was good but we don’t tip sinfull (sic) homosexuals,” the customer wrote.

Two days later, Madison resident Eric Salzwedel went back to the same restaurant, requested that same waiter, and surprised him with the generous tip — which was the result of collaboration of more than 200 strangers.

Salzwedel is one of the co-founders of Do Good Wisconsin, a local organization “dedicated to helping local non-profits, organizations, and teachers continue to make an impact in their community by supporting their efforts.”

He posted a photo of the two checks on social media, writing “to the folks who felt it was necessary to write this hateful note and not tip… don’t worry.”

He added that about 250 people had pitched in to “cover the tip for you.”

Larry elders.hateful remarks about women are unearthed

He talked smack nonstop
.with glee..now he has to answer for it

"When you look at all these women that have marched -- something like 2 million women -- Donald Trump has probably gotten more obese woman off the couch and in the streets, working out, than Michelle Obama did in eight years," he said on an episode reviewed by CNN.

He even has challenged mainstream orthodoxy on subjects like violence against women.

In the early 2000s, Elder maintained a page on his personal website on "women and domestic violence statistics," citing three articles that alleged a narrative that violence against women was exaggerated for political gain of feminists. One of the articles cited by Elder claimed the Violence Against Women Act, which was signed into law in 1994, was passed with the goal of "redistributing power from the ruling class (men) to the oppressed class (women)." Another asked, "Why does our culture refuse to hold women as well as men accountable for their participation in domestic violence?"

In his books, Elder endorsed pregnancy discrimination, according to a report from Media Matters, suggesting that working mothers aren't "dedicated" and available for an "all-hands-on-deck commitment" to work
