CA cops weaponize the DMV against protestors when the DA declines to press charges.

Tim Huey knew he could, and likely would, get arrested. But he said he never could’ve anticipated what ended up happening to him on Sept. 30, 2021, in San Francisco.

On that date, Huey, joined by members of two advocacy groups — Bay Area Coalition for Economic Justice and Citizenship for All, and the Movement for Citizenship for All — led a demonstration on the Golden Gate Bridge. Huey and dozens of others blocked traffic with their cars.

. Huey said he and four others were eventually instructed by the CHP to drive to the Golden Gate Bridge View Point, where they were detained and arrested. The DA’s office ultimately declined to file charges.

But that’s not where the story ends. Huey told SFGATE that the CHP also issued a notice to the DMV, which suspended the driver’s licenses of the five people who were arrested. Notably, the notice issued by the CHP cited Vehicle Code 21061, which is supposed to be used in cases of physical or mental impairment – the implication being that CHP had deemed the protesters incapable of driving a car.

Almost a year later, Huey is still wrapping his head around an extracurricular punishment that took months of effort to undo, and has set off alarm bells among local civil rights lawyers.

“This case raises a serious concern about statewide law enforcement invoking inappropriate vehicle code provisions in order to punish people whom they think local law enforcement will not deal with harshly enough,” Rio Scharf, a fellow at the Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights of the SF Bay Area, told SFGATE. “They should not be weaponizing inappropriate provisions of the vehicle code to punish political

However, a form filled out by a CHP officer the day of Huey’s arrest, reviewed by SFGATE, includes a box checked for “mental/emotional condition” — and the vehicle code in question clearly identifies “evidence of incapacity” as the threshold necessary for CHP to recommend a license suspension to the DMV.

Embattled Texas megachurch pastor quits after admitting to 'unhealthy' Instagram relationship

Matt Chandler, the lead pastor at the Village Church, which operates under the Southern Baptist sect, announced this week that he's resigning his position after having an Instagram relationship. Chandler, who is married with three children, told his flock, "I fell short."

Christianity Today explained that the elders in the church discovered Chandler's secret, reviewing some of the comments he'd made on the social media site. They found that the direct messages he exchanged "revealed something unhealthy."

Chandler is an anti-Choice pastor who once called rape victims "worse than Hitler." His church also "disciplined" a female church member for wanting to divorce her husband after she discovered he was watching adult videos sexually exploiting children. The man was later prosecuted by the FBI. After a huge backlash, the church issued an apology.

Calling the actions "unguarded and unwise," Chandler said he agreed with the assessment from the elders and was grateful for their spiritual oversight.

It all began when Chandler was approached by a woman who said she was disturbed by the way Chandler was talking to her friend on Instagram.

Law enforcement officers responded to a shooting incident Sunday in Phoenix, Arizona, where two people were killed and five others injured.

A gunman who killed two people and injured five others – including two police officers – in Phoenix Sunday was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and wearing tactical gear, according to police.

The shooter, who police said appears to have died by suicide, was also found with several magazines, incendiary devices, a gas mask and helmet, the Phoenix Police Department said in a news release, adding surveillance footage shows the gunman throwing a Molotov cocktail at a restaurant window, though it failed to ignite.

The suspect has yet to be positively identified, police said, and authorities have not named the victims. Of the two killed, one was an adult man and the other an adult woman, the release said. Both police officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries, as did three other bystanders, all of whom are adult men.
